Maycomb is a tired, distressed old town that needed change. Fortunately me, myself and I changed it in an unexpected way. I didn't even know what I was doing at the time; I wasn't trying to change Maycomb, but I did. And I'm glad I did it because I found what I was missing. Oh sorry, my name is Jean Lousise, but I wish for you to call me Scout. Since I was young everyone called me Scout. I'm 25, but this story takes place when I was 7; A vital time in my life. Even when I was 7, Maycomb was a "normal" place, but my family know something was wrong. I have a brother name Jem who was two years older than me. He was everything what I needed. My father was one of my best friends, but not in a normal way. We respected each others and knew when to give up an argument. From him I was given my curiosity ans knowlege. My teacher Miss Caroline, told me to "stop reading", which was absolutely wrong . Even with those orders from my sun deprived teacher, Atticus told me to never stop and I never have; in eeey possible way. Besides Atticus I didn't have much friends, but this changed when I turned 6 years old. It was my birthday party and my maid Cal was making cake and ordered me to play outside with Jem and his friend Dill. I remember wanting to stay inside because Dill and Jem always wanted me to play the girl roles. Which I still dissagree with, but I gave up and played. While playing I looked over my shoulder and saw my neighbor Arthur sitting by this huge tree. I asked Jem who this strange boy was. He told me about him; Arthur was this 8 years old who had a crazy abusive father who depended on alcohol to stay with his family. He also had a mother who as quiet as a Mockingbird. Calpurnia always found out her gossip by listening to her while hanging the wet clothes outside. While listening to Jem paint a picture of this boys life I was watching him intensely. For some reason I had felt a weird vibe coming off of him. We made eye contact and I looked away and made eye contact with flying dirt. Apparently we were playing dogs. While deciding on wether I chase Dill or throw some dirt back, I heard Arthur laughing. Almost enough to cause a coughing attack. I looked at him and he smiled with his crooked smile A year after our first face to face accountancy, we played everyday. Our favorite game was a made up game called "boo". It involved a version of hide and go seek and ghost and the grave yard. One person would count and everyone would hide. Then the people hiding would try to scare him by only saying Boo . Ever since that first day I knew we would have been friends or so I thought. I thought I knew him, but I guess I didn't. I can remember the day that he left me and when I found out why. It was sunny and Jem and I were playing spies outside when I saw the cops knock at Arthur's house. I was curious and still In character, went to find out what was happening. I ran up by an open window and placed my ear to the cold brick. That when I heard one of the cops saying "Arthur you're on house arrestt. You know you can't go outside." "Why" screamed now 14 year old Arthur. "Anyone who is sane would know that stabbing your mother is a crime." I quietly backed off to understand what just happened. I turned to Jem and ran inside to talk to Atticus. The back door slammed and the whole house cracked. Of course Calpurnia yelled at us, but I didn't listen. I kept running to Atticus. He was sitting on his chair rocking drinking coffee. I told him what happened and Atticus confirmed what I thought was a mirage- I read about them in an article Jem gave me- . I felt like I lost my best friend. Technically I did, but to show my maturity I kept my head up and acted like I did not care; which was far from true. From that day on, I went outside and stared at the tree I first saw him at, but this soon ended when I turned 16. I had more "important" things to do according to my aunt Alexandra. I was in school and on the debate team working all my time away. Rarely, I played outside. Jem was in his senior year of school and still, was the same brother I always knew. Even though he was the star quarter back for our schools football team. For one of my debate subjects we had to research and pick a side on "school uniforms". I was having trouble thinking straight so I went outside to cool off. I sat down on my porch and looked up into the sky and then looked down straight at the tree where I met Arthur. I saw a reflection of something shiny and tried to forget about it, but I couldn't. So I got up and went straight to the tree to find a secret hole. Where four Indian head coins and two pieces of gum. I took the inside and showed Atticus the coins. He said they were take more care of and that they looked to been ten years old: According to the date. I went upstairs into my room and looked at the gum. Finally I opened a piece and put it into my mouth. Inside the wrapper it said"Boo". I never heard that before so I kept thinking, forgetting about my homework. Then suddenly during debate practice I remembered where I heard the word boo from. I ran home and went back to the tree only to find another gift; A pack of cards and a flower. I looked through every card for another "boo" to show up, but i couldn't find one. Disappointedly, I took the flower and ripped each petal off. Surprisingly, each petal had the word boo on it. I knew who was leaving gifts for me: Arthur.
