Chapter Six

Chapter Six : BACK TO THE MISSION

ANGEL

I WAKE UP TO a beeping sound. Its loud, and I can hear voices just down the hall.

She's in the middle of a forest?

I can't believe it!

This is so ... so ... SO awesome!

This is cool and all, but I'm kinda hungry.

I sit up, rubbing my eyes. I'm sleeping in Ella's room. She has taken a pallet on the floor, and is still asleep. Nudge and the others are awake, and I feel the cold wood on the floor as I get up. It's clearly late in the morning, and on any other day, I would already have been woken up by Max, or Fang sometimes.

Headed straight for Dr. Martinez's study, where all the noise is, I tiptoe. Peering around the corner, I see Fang, Nudge, Dr. Martinez. They must see me, too, because everyone is suddenly shouting.

"Angel, look at this - " Gazzy turns.

"We know where Max is now!" Nudge giggles.

Their excitement was contagious, and I bounced over, ignoring the annoying beeps, and looking at the computer screen. Sure enough, there were markings. One dot was red, and the other dot was blue. There were smaller, green stars, spaced out tremendously. I figured they were enemy bases, or something of the sort. I knew we were the blue dot, based on the YOU ARE HERE sign that flashed above it. The red dot said EXPERIMENT 00001 IS THERE.

I looked at Fang. His stance and facial expression gave nothing away, but there was no way he could not, not be happy. All we had to do now was eat, suit up, and get Max.

"Who wants breakfast, hmn? I've learned from the best that rescue missions don't happen on empty stomachs," Dr. Martinez said. I wholeheartedly agreed.

I ATE QUICKLY. I scarfed down those eggs like they were nothing, too eager. Too excited. For the first time in two and a half months, Max was within my reach. I kept thanking Dr. Martinez, Ella, Angel - even the small dog Ella had, whose name I didn't know.

"I say we call her Totally obsessed. Because she's totally obsessed. With Total!" Total says, trying to grab onto my jeans. Angel and Nudge argue from behind me about girl stuff. Gazzy jumps around me. Iggy and Ella say their last goodbyes, but I was too eager to get back to the mission to scold any of them about it. I'll save that honour for Max.

After breakfast, and a record breaking quick shower, I am waiting for everyone else. "What?" Iggy asks. "Might as well stretch, before I tear a muscle." He explains. I roll my eyes.

Minutes after, we are all headed about three states northwest. It was clear from the map that Max's holding place wasn't in a desert at all, like I had thought at one point. It was in the forest, and it would take an hour in a half to get there. It didn't matter. I was willing to fly for however long it took.
