You never realize how bleak the night sky is until that's all you have to look at. We are now two hours into our trip and I've done nothing but sit in this very uncomfortable seat and watch the streetlights whoosh and whirl around me in a symmetrical mess. I loved watching the streaks paint the dark night with fluorescent yellow. Flynn had attempted to talk to me but my two word responses weren't cutting it anymore.
After another half an hour in the car, filled with mind-numbing silence, a loud bang was heard. The car began swerving as Flynn tried to regain control of the car. In hindsight, everything was going too well. There was no traffic, the atmosphere was decent at best, and not once had I felt the suffocating need to stretch my legs and jump out of the passenger side window. I didn't scream, which obviously surprised Flynn, but I did hold on to my seat like my life absolutely depended on it, which it sort of did. Flynn pulled the taxi into the empty side lane whilst muttering very colorful words under his breath that would've made my mother turn three different shades of red. I remained silent the whole time, even as he put the car in park and took the key out.
He looked at me with a sheepish look, which worried me.
"Do you happen to know how to change a tire?"
I wanted to say a lot of things right then, but instead I just raised an eyebrow at him. What I didn't expect was the bubbly feeling that started to float up from my stomach. I let out a small giggle, it lept through the air in a light manner. He let out his own low, rumbling chuckle. Soon, we were both a mess of confused laughter and exasperated giggles on my behalf. Tears were streaming down my face in the form of black pearls. I hadn't laughed this hard in a while. This was so bizarre, this whole experience was, that I couldn't even begin to get mad. Everything was a mess, but oh God did it feel so right.
After sobering I looked towards him, "you don't?"
He smiled a smile that could only be described as crooked, "never really got around to it I guess."
I nodded my head, "you do realize that I've never even tried driving a car, right? I can't even tell which is the accelerator and the brake."
His eye widened slightly, "how have you gone this long without learning to drive? Are you even old enough to drive? Oh, God, are you a minor? Oh n-"
I put my hand on his shoulder as a sign for him to stop talking, "I'm nineteen, but I've spent my whole life in New York. I've never had the need to drive with the subway and taxis and all."
The color began coming back to his paled face.
"You can't scare me like that. I already risked my job, I don't wanna risk five to ten years in prison for kidnapping."
I laughed slightly under my breath and unbuckled my seat belt, unlocking the door without saying a word as I swung it open, careful not to step out into oncoming traffic. Flynn looked at me oddly.
"Where are you going?"
I shrugged, "I saw a sign about a mile back saying there was a McDonald's on the next exit so I thought we might as well go and find anyone that could help us, or at least get something since," I lift my sleeve to expose my watch, "it's past midnight and I haven't eaten anything since the afternoon."
Flynn rolls down his the window after I slam the door shut, "we're just gonna leave the taxi?"
I shrugged, "lock it. It's not like there's anything that valuable in it. I'll take my backpack, you take your wallet, it'll be fine."
Seemingly reluctant, Flynn cuts the ignition and steps out of the car as I had.
"You know this is a bad idea, right?"
