Like usual, I was waiting for the principal to call my adoptive parents, my social worker, the insurance company and this time, the hospital. I was sitting in the nurses' office after a serious accident in the chem. lab involving a Bunsen burner, some crackers, chemicals, a tissue and my best friend Tony, who was sitting next to me.
"DEAR GOD woman! There must be a less painful treatment than this." I cried. Nurse Ilsa was treating one of my lesser burns on my right hand.
Both Tony and I were covered in burns and scratches. I had a small burn on my right hand, loads up my left arm and chest (chemicals got through my shirt) and a few glass scratches on my face. Tony had deep scratches all over his hands, burns on his lower arms and even some on his thighs from a spillage I caused from someone else's experiment in a panic.
"Shut the hell up Alfie. This is your fault. Be a man and suck it up. You almost burned my private business and I'm not complaining. Besides, you have worse injuries and the hospital won't be all that gentle." Tony said in his Australian accent. Even when he was in pain he was calm.
"But it hurts!" I whined to him.
"Tony's right Alfie." My friend and Tony's girlfriend, Maya, intercepted.
"Ugh! Why are you here Maya? You always take his side in things like this!" I pouted.
"My best friend and boyfriend were hurt in a fairly serious incident! Where else would I be?" After she finished her inspirational speech of devotion, she went back to texting.
"Oh so they're 'incidents' now? What happened to the good old days of the 'accidents'?" I replied.
"Although we all know you're a death trap waiting to happen, the cops don't and think you might be trying to kill us all." Maya responded in a bored tone.
"Great. I'm going to jail and I only just have two friends, never had a real girlfriend and barely turned eighteen. Fottere stupido soggetto a incidenti idiota-" Maya cut off my self-degrading rant with an annoying gleam in her eyes.
"So you've never had a real girlfriend?" She asked.
"No." I looked at her suspiciously.
"Really that's interesting." Tony started to drink some water.
"Why...?" I shouldn't have asked.
"This means you're still a virgin, right?" This made me turn bright red and Tony spit his drink all of Nurse Ilsa and Nurse Sarah (his nurse) who were still there, listening in. Maya ignored this. "Well? Are you?"
"No Maya! I'm not! You don't drag me to parties just to sit around!" I defended myself as both nurses looked at me in disgust and disappointment.
"Honestly, teenagers." Ilsa mumbled. "Mr DiMatteo, you really shouldn't take advantage of young drunken girls like that." She tutted.
My mouth dropped in shock and both Tony and Maya began to laugh.
"This isn't a laughing matter children." Sarah carried on. "It's a cruel thing your friend is doing and you're just sitting back and laughing?" She asked in silent fury.
"I never knew it was this bad." Ilsa said to Sarah loudly enough for us to hear. "Maybe we should report this to his social worker. It could be related to his past."
That stopped the others from laughing.
I wasn't hung up on my past, I could talk about it freely. But it was still quite painful. It always would be. So I just shook my head and walked out of the office with the nurses calling after me telling me that I should wait for an ambulance to arrive for more treatment.
