Hazel
"DO NOT PICK THAT UP!!! PLEASE!" I cry as a diamond pops out of the ground at my feet. Of course, Markus does anyways. Why do they have to be cursed? Every time I get nervous, precious rocks pop out of the ground. And they have to be cursed. It's not fair. I know he's a jerk, but no one deserves my cursed rocks.
"Or else what? What will you do?" Markus taunts, being a bully as usual. Of course, I can't answer because what am I supposed to tell him? That I am cursed to bring cursed jewels out of the ground? I just sigh as he picks it up and pockets it. Another jewel curse I have to live with. I just can't. It's too much to bear.
"What do you think this one will buy me? A new bike?"
"Markus," I start, "Please don't."
"Please don't what?"
"Use it"
"What about use it?"
"Please do not spend the diamond."
"Why not," he practically whines, "What will you do about it?"
I concentrate really hard on how he must feel, but more importantly, I concentrate on what he sees. I have only done this once before. I slowly walk towards him, concentrating of the thought of him seeing me with my arms at my sides. Then, when I am sure I am concentrating hard enough, I reach my hand out and he does not react. "I will do this," I say, quickly putting my hand in his pocket and taking the diamond out.
"Hey," he whines, "How did you do that that fast? Your hand was by your side just a second ago!!!"
"Very, very, carefully," I mutter, almost fainting as I run for my life after school, "Very, very, carefully."
I run down to the horse pasture and jump on a white stallion. Zac comes chasing after me, and jumps on the palmetto horse. He chases after me, but I urge mine to go faster.
He calls after me again, "Hazel, wait up!" I finally slow down and come to a pond with a singular tree on the bank. I tie my horse up and start climbing as quickly as possible. Once I get on the first branch, Zac starts climbing up. He is out of breath from calling my name so many times. He reaches my branch in no time at all to see me crying. He puts his arm around me and asks, "What happened?"
"You wouldn't understand," I sob.
"I might not, but I can try," he answers. "Was it that mean ole Markus again?"
"No," I say, "It's a lot more than that."
"What happened? It's okay, you can tell me." He squeezes me tighter.
I spill everything out to him, even the part about me concentrating hard to make Markus believe I wasn't moving. He didn't even act surprised, even though I haven't yet told him that I have wings. "You're not surprised?" I ask quietly while it sinks in.
"Not really," He says.
"Why not?" I ask him the same words Markus asked me, only minutes ago.
"In fact, I have also been encountering weirdness."
"Really? How?"
