Zac
I don't think I'll ever fly as gracefully as Hazel, but as the clock ticks closer and closer to 11 (I watch it with my raptor vision), I slow down and go inside my treehouse room and sit on the mattress and wait.
I wake up startled with Hazel's face just inches from mine and I want to kiss her again. But then Hazel starts giggling.
"What?" I ask, feeling heat in my cheeks. I really hope she couldn't hear what I was thinking a few seconds ago.
"You were drooling in your sleep." She giggles again and stands up straight.
I have never seen her this hysterical before now. I quickly sit up and wipe my face hard with my sweaty hands. "Okay, where are we going?"
"I told you yesterday. We are flying to my house."
"Right." I say, wiping the sleep out of my eyes. "Take me there."
Instead of climbing the ladder up, Hazel jumps and grabs the roof and pulls herself up. I just jump up on to the roof.
"C'mon, slowpoke." Hazel sprints off the roof, and I follow.
It takes two minutes to get to her house. It is a little, run down house but it looks like it would be cozy inside.
Inside, it smells like alcohol, and before I can see anything, Hazel steps in front of me and stares straight into my eyes. I cannot read her mind, nor see around her, forcing me to look into her cute brown/green eyes. They are the most beautiful eyes I have ever seen. Ever. She smiles mischievously and kisses me so hard I forget everything, and when she pulls away five seconds later, I'm blindfolded.
"Sneaky much?" I say.
You're not the only one who has tricks up their sleeve. Follow me,
she says in my head.
Ok. I think back. So I can't read her thoughts, but I can still talk to her. The next second, my hand is warm. Hazel leads me into another room and walks me three steps in and turns me counterclockwise 36* and says "Take off your blindfold." It seems to echo through the silence.
I do as I'm told and take off my blindfold (now as I see it is a scarf), and take a look.
When I open my eyes, my pupils quickly dilate to let less light in. When I see her huge painting of me the day before yesterday, I gasp. I am breathless. Literally. I forgot to breathe.
I feel Hazel's fingers creep around my waist from behind. Turning my head to the right, I kiss the top of hers.
"It's- it's beautiful. I'm breathless. It's amazing. You're amazing. How can I repay you?"
"Repay me? You don't have to. Painting it was fun enough. Plus showing me your treehouse. And your wings." Her beautiful hazel eyes sparkle with delight.
I finally realize that I am standing in Hazel's room. I turn around and take it all in. She has a lot of horse paintings on smaller canvases hanging around her room, but something else catches my eye. "Uh... Haz?"
"Yeah?"
"Uhhh... what is your- bed on top of?"
"My mom's idea of a practical joke. On my seventh birthday, she put a rock wall under my bed. And my nightstand."
"She sounds nice..."
"She's not." There is pain in Hazel's voice. She kicks her shoes off and flies to sit on the edge of the bed. Hazel pats next to her, and in no time, I have my shoes kicked off to go join her.
She leans into my shoulder as I put my arm around her. It's like we were programmed for this.
"Zac, it's awful. My mom goes to bars in the day and crashes on the couch at night. That is why it smelled like alcohol when you first walked in. I am left to make my own breakfast and dinner every day. At least I have clothes and a shelter.
"Zac, there are people that don't have anywhere to live. I am so fortunate to have a roof over my head, at the very least." At this point, Hazel was crying. It hurts me to see her this way.
"Can I just take a fifteen minute nap?" Hazel sobs into my shoulder.
I nod and lay back so that my feet are still dangling off the bed, but my head is touching the wall. Hazel leans sorta sideways with her head on my chest. I clasp her hand.
