Chapter 2
I woke the next day to the sound of the birds singing. I really had missed that. I got dressed and tried to decide what I was going to do that day. I needed to find Tommy, he could be the key to finding out what really happened. But, I wanted to go to the old church yard, where Kayla was buried. I decided to go to the church first, I hadn't been to Kayla's grave since the funeral. I went downstairs, Jane had already left for work. I got some breakfast then l left.
I walked down the cobble path to the church when I began to feel scared. What if I couldn't do this? I kept on walking, through the wooden gate and into the graveyard. I looked at each individual headstone, trying to find Kayla. Other were here to, some crying but some just kinda sitting there. Flowers lay everywhere, pictures of people sat infont of each grave. I could feel each pair of eyes from each picture stare at me, like they were looking straight through me. Just staring with their blank, expressionless eyes. I stopped dead in my tracks. I saw a picture of a young girl. Bright eyes and an all to familliar smile. Kayla. I couldn't do this. I couldn't look at her, not even the picture. Her eyes, though bight, were filled with sadness. I ran out of the graveyard and back to Jane's, tears running down my face.
I calmed myself down, the crying had made me feel a bit better. But, now I felt terrible. She was my sister, I should of stayed. I prayed that she could forgive me.
'Holly, are you home?' It was Jane, the opening of the door and Jane's voice had scared me. It had been so quiet.
'Yeah, I'm in the living room.' I called out. She walked in and began talking again.
'It's my lunch break so I thought I should come and check on you. You know, make sure you're alright and-' She turned and stopped talking. She could sense something wasn't quite right. My red eyes probably gave it away. She came and sat down beside me.
'Did you go and vist her?' She asked. I nodded but then started crying again.
'I couldn't do it,' I sobbed. 'I saw her grave but then I just ran.' Jane hugged me and tried to wipe away my tears.
'It's normal to run away.' She said. 'You've only been once before. Also, you're still grieving, I know your Dad and I'm sure that he has tried to forget about her. He hasn't let you grieve properly.' I nodded, he had got rid of all her stuff or he didnt even bother bringing it with us when we left. 'I need to go now darling, are you going to be ok here?' She asked.
'Yeah I'll be fine,' I replied, wiping my eyes. Jane nodded and left. Now seemed like as good a time as any to try and find Tommy. I walked over to where his house was. I could only hope that he still lived here. I rang the door bell and waited. I could hear sounds coming from inside, then a figure came over to the door and opened it. It was Tommy! He hadn't changed a bit. His face lit up when he saw me there. He put a hand over his mouth and just stared before speaking.
'Holly, is it really you?' He asked, still in shock.
'Yeah Tommy, it's me,' I laughed. He hugged me and pulled me inside.
'What are you doing back? I thought you and your Dad weren't coming back?' He said, sitting opposite me.
'I've come back alone. Dad couldn't face it. But, I need your help Tommy'
'What do you need help with?' He asked
'Kayla's death, I don't think it was suicide. It couldn't of been,' I said, Tommy's face fell.
'I didn't think it was either, but I had no idea what to do about it.' He said. I felt a bit of relief, it wasn't only me. 'What are we gonna do then?' We kept talking, trying to come up with ideas and plans. Then it hit me.
'Nobody has been in my old house since I left right?' I asked.
'No, nobody, why?' He said, puzzled.
'Then all Kayla's stuff should still be there!' Tommy caught on and we both went over to my old house. We reached where the flowers started. I carefully tip-toed around them, not wanted to crush a single petal. I reached the door, I turned to Tommy who was still on the other side of the shrine. He looked so scared. 'Are you coming?' I called out to him.
'I don't know if I can.' he said, his head hanging low. I walked back over to him.
'It's ok to be scared. But, we'll do it together. Earlier I ran away from her grave cos I was scared.' I tried to make him feel better.
'Ok, lets do it. After, we can both go to her grave. Like you said we'll do it together,' He smiled at me, I smiled back and nodded. We walked over to the front door. I couldn't open it, my hands were both trembling. Tommy took hold of one and gave it a reasurring squeeze. I turned to him and gave him a nervous smile. I opened the door and walked in. I went straight to her room while Tommy tried searching downstairs.
Kayla never really let me go into her room, so I had no idea what I might find in there. I searched and searched. Then I found her diary, I sat down on her bed and read what she had written the day before she died. It wasn't anything out of the ordinary. I turned the page and found she had written a little bit on the day she died. I read it and my jaw dropped.
'Tommy, get up here now!' I yelled. He raced into the room.
'What's happened, what have you found?' He asked. I handed him the diary.
'Read it,' I said.
'Dear diary, Dad made me get an abortion. There now is no baby. Life can go back to normal now.' He dropped the diary and sat down beside me. I took his hand and held it tight. I couldn't believe it. Kayla had been pregnant.
