HER FEET SANK into the deep sea of grains of sand, with every step she took. Nobody knew what secrets it held underneath the hot sand, into the desert's depth. It was much like the seas and oceans of water, with the difference that this sea of sand went way deeper, reaching the core of the Earth. Yet, there she was, guiding another traveller, one who once was devoted to his clan, among the dunes. Her final destination, the Promised Land.

The wind caught her hair and blew it across her face like a veil. She removed the strands from her face and moved her hand, placing it so that she could protect her eyes from the blinding light of the sun and the grains of sand that danced in the air around her. Compared to the lone traveller, her eyes showed no fear of what was unknown to the rest of the Grounders. Instead, she was determined to protect the man and help him reach safely the kand of providence. She knew the desert better than the back of her own hand; it was the place she had grown up after all.

She took a look behind her, allowing herself to stop for a few minutes and wait for the fellow Grounder to approach. When he reached the girl's side, the both of them stood on the top of the dune and let their gaze travel far, beyond the Dead Zone, to the place they saught to arrive at.

She extended her arm, showing the minefield ahead of them. It was a dangerous place for someone to cross. The path was only known to those of the Sangedakru who, just like young Sofi, were helping people find their way through it. The minefield, along with the thieves who had inhabited the Dead Zone, had proven fatal and they were not always able to protect the travellers.

The night had fallen, daylight had given its place to the pale moonshine. The temperature had dropped dramatically below zero. It was not safe for them to camp there, but the girl had no other choice. She was not willing to sacrifice neither of their lives, even if that meant they still had days of walking until they could find the City of Light.

Sofi did not mind. The City of Light was meant to be a better place for everyone. A place where no war would take place. A place where everyone would be safe and free. A place where they would all be equal. She wanted to go there, too. But her job was not done yet.

She fell asleep looking at the night sky. The stars and the constellations that they created were her only company during her travels through the desert. They guided her and kept her safe, disappearing during the day, but they were always there at night.

When she awoke, she was all alone. The traveller was gone and so were the things he was carrying with him along with the food and water she brought with her. She looked around her with despair, searching for him, but he was nowhere to be found. Her eyes filled with tears and heart broke a little bit more as she was not able to protect him. There were endless possibilities that crossed Sofi's mind regarding his disappearance. And they were just too may for the Sangedakru girl to handle. Around her were only sand dunes, no evidence of human existence.
