Chapter 29 - Bitter Truth

Sasuke pov:

"That can't be true! There's no way that's true! He tried to kill me! He killed our clan, our parents! He tried to kill me several times!" I screamed, unable to digest the information I was hearing about Itachi and the clan's massacre.

I had met with Harada – a black market dealer – so I could find out information on Itachi. Saya's words had intrigued me and pushed me into wanting to find more details about my clan's massacre. Of course, I didn't believe her when she said that I was judging Itachi without knowing anything about him. After all, what was there to know? He had killed the clan, he had tried to kill me several times and he was a member of the Akatsuki! He was known as an S-rank criminal, a cruel and heartless man who I wanted to kill. What more information could there possibly be?

It was unexpected that Saya had ended up confronting the person we were supposed to guard for Harada to give me the information I wanted. We were all shocked to see her fighting with much more vigor than what we had seen or heard before. She had even transformed her katana to a hanwei naginata while fighting – it was a jutsu I hadn't heard of before and what she said she would tell me about later. I assume that she had wanted to kill the man but he had managed to escape, leaving Saya hanging and annoyed.

Saya had been able to save the children he had threatened to hurt. She had left them in temporary custody of an orphanage in Otogakure and had given a very serious and threatening warning to the man that if she found even one of the children hurt, he would pay with his life. She promised the children that she would return soon and take them to Konoha where they would be able to live freely and with nothing to worry about.

We had then left Otogakure after that to find a man named Rokuro who was renowned for knowledge on even the deepest darkest secrets of the world. We had met him and he was surprisingly a very balance person. He was calm and collected when he spoke to us and not stone hearted like what most people of such professions would be. He had agreed to tell me the truth about the Uchiha Clan and all the things that had been kept in the dark but never had I expected to hear something like this!

"I'm afraid it's true, Sasuke san." Rokuro san said in an even tone. "It was Itachi san's mission to stop the coup d'état and despite knowing very well of what the future held for him, he resolved himself to wipe out the clan he loved in order to protect the village he loved. He led you on to hate him so he could pay at least a small amount of the price through your punishment for him. I can't even imagine what he went through emotionally when he slaughtered his clan...."

Suigetsu, Karin and Jugo were just as shocked if not as shaken as me. But Saya didn't seem surprised. She was looking down, a look of anguish etched onto her features.

"No! I won't believe that! I can't! It can't be true!" I yelled again.

"Sasuke," Saya called to me and I looked at her, my breath getting stuck in my throat at the expression on her face. "Remember Itachi from your childhood. Connect to him....connect to the man he is inside. You are the only one who can see the truth inside him."

A searing pain went through my head as memories I had suppressed flashed through my mind. Memories that I had forgotten, memories I had overlapped with that of that dark blood splattered night. The times he played with me, taught me shuriken jutsu despite his busy and tiring schedule, the times he protected me from bullies or anything that I was afraid of, the morale support he gave me, his encouragement, his smiles, his anger towards those of the clan who didn't quite like him that so many times I couldn't understand as a child.....and finally the tears that fell from his eyes that I thought was a hallucination on the night of the massacre when he left me unconscious in the middle of the street in the Uchiha Compound.
