Chapter 005
She's Not

"Anything else you plan on purchasing?" Asked Elizabeth as she watched me eye the store aisles one last time before shaking my head, "No... No... I'm good now, but..." I, unsure, glanced around one last time.

"You're holding ten bags, that's already eight more than your little twig of a boyfriend can manage!" She snickered

"You're holding ten bags, that's already eight more than your little twig of a boyfriend can manage!" She snickered.

I couldn't help but crack a smile as she said it, "Okay, okay, I suppose this is enough then." I reasoned.

"Then let's go, I have things to do today too." She spoke up.

"But I asked you if you were free today and you said yes, what plans could possibly be more important than that?!" I asked full of curiosity.

"I said I was free from eight to noon, it's about to be noon and I'm going to be late to meeting this girl now." She replied.

"Ooo, a girl?" I laughed.

"Not. Like that. She's a young girl-"

"Woah there, how young? Remember this can be illegal-"

"Shut up," she burst out laughing, "I said it's not like that, this is for a 'big sister project' at the company I work for. We basically have to look after a young lady from the local school and help them with homework and what not... you know, big sister things!" She smiled.

"Do the guys get to do this also?" I asked as we walked towards the store exit.

"Of course! But they're the 'big brother project'... I'm not sure why they didn't just combine the two and call it 'big sibling project' but oh well."

"Well, at least you're doing something productive with your life, meanwhile here I am... buying things I do not need but I want and can buy because Arthur's almost always busy." I sighed sadly.

"Why don't you just get a job where he works? You could see him more often." She suggested.

"But if I'm bad at the job, it'll be embarrassing for all of us. I don't think the working life is for me, I've done my dues years ago and seeing as I should've died ages ago, I think I've earned myself the right to a peaceful life, don't you?" I asked.

She simply shrugged, "I'm just saying that I personally would get bored of sitting around all day, _____."

"I don't!" I smiled, "I buy a lot of stuff sometimes!"

---

I sat back on the leather seat of Elizabeth's car as she parked the car right next to the park, "Are you going to stay in here then?" She asked.

"Yeah, I've walked enough today, you go on ahead though." I laughed quietly as I scrolled through pictures on my phone.

"Alright then, I'll be just a minute." She spoke as she shut the ignition off and got out to go meet her 'little sister.'

As I sat in the quiet car, I took a moment to ponder over what she had been saying earlier. Maybe I should get a job, just for the heck of it if anything. And if I hated it, then I could just quit and still be alright.

I pressed my lips and sighed, the older days were so much easier though they seem to have blurred immensely as time has dragged on. I can't even recall most of how we all ended where we are now, it's like there's this huge gap between the 17th century and today... but somehow, it feels like I was just there in the 17th century just 5 months ago or so... weird.

I was knocked out of my thoughts as the car door in the back opened.

"Go on in then, Jamie, that over there is _______, she's a friend of mine, I'm sure you'll get along!" Elizabeth introduced.

The girl had fairly long brown hair and bright brown eyes, she had obviously taken her time perfecting her makeup, however upon clearing her throat, she barley managed to muster out an audible enough, "Hello."

It was short, high pitched, and very quiet.

"Sup kid?" I replied.

"N-Nothing, I'm.. fine." She stuttered out.

I blinked in her direction before lamely replying with a longer than usual, "Cool."

The next sound that I heard was the door opening on the drivers side, Elizabeth pressed her lips together only momentarily as she turned the ignition back on.

"Right then, Jamie, I'll be dropping you off at home around seven so you can get to bed early, is that fine?" Elizabeth asked.

"Yeah." Jamie replied back quickly.

Elizabeth was looking at her in the review mirror, she smiled as if she had hope she'd grow closer to the kid with time. "So what's your favourite type of music?" Elizabeth asked, turning in her seat quite a bit so she could see Jamie's face.

I watched her reaction as well, it was almost comical seeing the girl tense up at the question, "O-Oh.. whatever is f-fine." She stuttered again. She was so tense, I grew tense watching her.

"Are you sure?" Elizabeth asked her.

Jamie nodded quickly but almost didn't even move her head as he nods were very short but certain.

"Fine, how about I just put today's hits?" She suggested, turning back in her seat and plugging her phone into the AUX cord.

I listened in to the music hoping to know the song name so I could call it out to impress myself, but to my dismay, when she said "today's hits" she meant some Hungarian hits because I couldn't understand a word!

As she pulled out of the parking lot, I glanced back at Jamie so as for her to not notice I was looking at her, she was slowly pulling her headphones out of her pink knitted bookbag, but as she put them in, she left one of them out so she could hear us, dare we call her name to ask her some more stuff.

I rolled my seat back a bit and took in a deep breath as the AC cooled the hot car down, this is the life.
