Chapter 012
Means Well

I sat up in my room playing only the best game in the world - Broblox - on my computer while Jamie ate a sandwich downstairs in the kitchen. Arthur, meanwhile, was probably watching tv downstairs as well. It was all going good.

That is, until I heard talking happening downstairs. I brushed it off the first time, assuming Arthur was trying to converse with Jamie only to be shut down because it's impossible to talk to her.

However, then I heard some laughter.

That was... quite peculiar.

I slipped my slippers on and headed downstairs.

"So he got you roses and you already knew that? Did he flat out tell you he was going to gift you them?" Arthur asked.

I slowly walked down the hall while making sure my footsteps went unheard and was led into the kitchen where Arthur was holding a cup of water and talking to Jamie from across the table.

"N-No" Jamie stuttered, "But he asked me like 'a flower website called Flowers Across Rural Tennessee asked me to ask my friends what type of flowers they prefer, and I was wondering if you'd tell me what flowers you prefer? The acronym is pretty cheeky.' And it was just so predictable since it was two days before Valentines day and we had been talking for a while as it is." She laughed.

"Flowers Across Rural Tennessee?" Arthur repeated, "He's a cheeky bastard, but that's funny. I hadn't a clue you were into barbarians such as him." He began to laugh with her.

"No, no!" She replied a bit more confidently, "He's truly wonderful and so kind and it's so strange because even with all that, I still have many doubts surrounding him."

"Doubts about what? From all you've said here, he honestly seems good for you, is he not?" Arthur asked before taking a sip of his drink.

"I..." She died down, "I'm not sure.. You see, the last person I was with was quite a long time ago, but we lasted for so long and.. Well, with him, everything was crystal clear and I always knew where I stood and well, in the end he ended up cheating on me.. B-But with this guy, he's so sweet and well, sometimes I just don't know where I stand or if we share any common ground or any interests, and yet, when I see him, all my doubts fade away and I remember why I adore him." A smile slowly formed on her face, "Regardless, it's only been two months I've shared with him and I don't wish to rush or ruin anything. Yet I always feel I will."

"It sounds to me as if you just don't have confidence, which you should. If you plan to be in a relationship with someone, you just have to be confident in your words, choices, and yourself. Do you understand, Jamie?" Arthur's voice began to sound stern but he wasn't mad, it was like he was trying to help her but it sounded more like a lecture, "You can't play with someone's feelings just because you're uncertain of your own."

"No, it's not like that. I do know how I feel of him. But, I'm just worried he doesn't feel the same or that I'm boring or insignificant to him... I want him to be happy, and most times I feel I'm not good for him." She said solemnly.

Arthur sat up and walked up to the cabinet and pulled down a glass then filled it with some orange juice and sat it in front of her notebook on the table, "You truly are but an innocent little girl, how ever do you land yourself in these situations?" He laughed lightly.

"It's not funny.." She muttered, raising a brow.

"No, it's hilarious and someday you too will laugh at this. There are so many things wrong in the world and here we both are, worrying about a boy." He said unintentionally cold, he continued, "This isn't me telling you he isn't important because in the moment, to you, he is. But in the end, think of it this way, either it works and you end up happy with him, or it doesn't and you move on. No matter what happens, the pain you'll feel is not ever permanent."

She gave a slow nod, but I couldn't tell if it was a nod of understanding or a nod to get the talk over and done with. Either way, I decided that perhaps it was time for me to enter the scene. I took a few quiet steps back to the stairs then added a kick to my steps and marched down loud enough for them to hear me coming.

"Yo Arthur!" I shouted down the hall as I entered the kitchen, "Wanna make me a sandwi-" I paused and squinted, "Wait, actually, never mind, you might still burn it, somehow... I'll just do it myself." I finished awkwardly.

Jamie and Arthur became somewhat quiet upon my arrival and I felt kind of weird... Was I interrupting more than I thought?

I opened up the fridge and pressed my lips together, "Did I interrupt something?"

"Not really, I was just helping Jamie plan out her week. As I always say, a proper calendar will keep you from fucking shit up too badly." Arthur spoke.

"You've literally never said that before." I replied.

"There's always a first for everything, love." He smiled, "Now then, Jamie, have you ever seen the Pirate of the Caribbean movies?"

"Just the first, I think." She replied calmly.

"Fantastic, come to the living room, I'll put the next one for you." He spoke, leading the way. Jamie quickly shuffled out of her seat and pulled her notebook back into her book bag and zipped it up quickly before following behind Arthur.

I was once again, alone, but this time, I was in the kitchen. I furrowed my brows. Arthur, that traitor... After two hundred years, you'd think you know a guy!

By the time I finished making my sandwich, Arthur finally returned with a calm grin printed across his face, "Hello again, dear."

"Don't 'hello again, dear' me." I squinted, "What the hell was all that?" I asked.

"What do you mean?" He asked, his eyes widening innocently.

"I mean that you didn't tell me what you were really talking about with her.. What did you say to her to get her to open up like that? I didn't even think she was capable of smiling, much less, laughter!" I hissed.

"You just have to be calm and find a common ground. She's timid is all, and I didn't lie - I was assisting her in proper time management. That's one of the 'big sister missions' on the list."

"Wow.." I began, not wanting to insult this nerd just yet, "So then what am I supposed to do? I tried to be nice, but she just doesn't like me."

"That's not true-"

"Did she even talk about me just then?" I asked, raising a brow.

He was quiet for a second before replying, "She said it's a nicely decorated home, and you adorned it so, so in a way, she went as far as to compliment your eye for decor."

"Mhmm.." I mumbled back as I took an angry bite out of the sandwich.

"Look, love," Arthur spoke sincerely as he put a hand on each of my shoulders, "Why don't you both head out to the mall or to the park and just do something together, tomorrow? I'm sure she'll come to terms with you if you're both out doing something enjoyable."

"She's still not nice." I replied, somewhat annoyed by earlier.

"Give her another chance, I'm sure you'll like her company... She's not good at talking, but she means well." He spoke as he set his chin on my shoulder and wrapped his arms around my waist. I couldn't help but smile lamely.. Over two hundred years of this, and I still get jittery by his touch.

"Fine." I replied harshly, "Tomorrow we're headed to the park and mall and mission 'Make this kid my fucking friend' will commence!" I cheered.

"That's good, love, now then, I'll be upstairs if you need me, I have a well deserved nap calling my name." Arthur smiled as he kissed my cheek and pulled the sandwich out of my hand gently.

Fucking asshole.
