Severance
Chapter 011
She Hears Us?After ice cream and a lot of looking around and window shopping with Jamie, we began making our way to my car. It was surprisingly still sunny out but it was almost six.
"Do you think your parents would even care if you spent the night? I mean, it's Friday anyways, isn't it?" I asked as I turned the engine on.
"Oh, it'll be alright, she shouldn't mind anymore." She spoke solemnly.
"Cool beans, because your house is kinda far and I don't wanna go all the way over there." I replied, backing out.
As we drove, listening to the radio, her words left a somewhat weird taste in my mouth, "Are you okay?" I asked randomly.
"Hm? Of course." She replied, "I'm almost done with my goals I set in my big sister project." She commented.
"Really? What's left over?" I asked.
"Well, I've worked a bit on my confidence, even though I still have a lot more to go in that category, I was able to open up to three new people these few days I've known you all. And... I have other minor goals as well, but the confidence one was the biggest one." She smiled, "After today though, all my goals will be completed."
"What goals do you have.. left?"
"To save a life." She answered it slowly as she stared ahead, "I said it before, but I love people and seeing them happy makes me feel better. I... I soon will accomplish that."
I let out kind of an awkward and uncomfortable laugh. Dammit, this kid is working with satan or something, but the way she said it was sending chills down my back.
"Yeah?" I replied.
"Y-Yeah, don't worry about it though, I'll save a life by telling a short story. It's.. not the best way to save a life, but it's the only way I can save-ugm- yeah." She cut herself off, "Sorry I'm so vague, that's not helpful."
"No, it's fine, I guess?"
I slowly pulled into my driveway and parked the car, "You can sleep in the guest bedroom downstairs, I'll be upstairs, you know the way." I spoke.
"Okay. Thank you.." she replied, pulling her bookbag over her shoulder.
"Arthur!" I shouted once inside.
There was a short silence as he walked down the stairs in a dark blue robe and socks, "You're home." He said, staring directly at me.
"Yes, it seems so.." I began, "What are you-"
"D-Don't ask." He said quickly and with some frustration in his tone.
We maintained strong eye contact as he quickly walked past me and to the dining table where he picked up a small hello kitty basket with some soaps and bath bombs, "I won't be needing this fucking shite then." He hissed.
I.. I didn't know what to say, so I waited for Jamie.
She quietly slipped through the door and shut it behind her roughly.
"___________?" She called out, "You told me to go to the guest room, but where is that?"
"Um.. down there." I pointed to the tall oak door down the hall.
"Can... you help me there?" She asked, "I was thinking I could tell you this story real quick, it's a homework assignment and it kind of means a lot.. is that weird? I feel that I phrased that weirdly, sorry." She spoke quickly.
"Nah, it's cool, and sure, I guess I have a few minutes to spare." I replied, heading over with her.
"Good!" She smiled.
"This will sound like a strange story, but that's only because I haven't figured out the ending yet.. it begins with a young girl who goes through all these obstacles only to one day, realise that it's all fake. Her life, her memories, her friends, they're all not real. And that.. that kind of really destroys her and her hopes.
However, she then meets these spies who know that they're fake, but that there is a better life - out there - a real life... they give her the instructions on how to escape, but that's it. They won't help her escape, that's all her choice.
So then, seeing her two options, it's up to her to act, and escape the world that she's in, where everyone and everything is fake, in order to live in a real world where everything is unplanned and spontaneous, or.. she can not act, and she can stay living amongst these... creations who know not of the truth, but where everything is perfect..."
"That sounds like a lame story, who wouldn't want to live where everything is perfect?" I asked.
"That's why it's a choice... it's not that there's a good or bad answer in the story, but that there is a choice." She spoke, "What... what would you choose?"
I thought for a moment, "Well, regardless of whether or not the people are literally fake, to the reader, they're real and act real, right?"
"Yes."
"So, what's the problem with living in a perfect world with the perfect people?"
"The problem with this specific scenario is that they're not real. Everything is basically a figment of someone else's imagination. So, in the end, the life you've lived, no matter what accomplishments you've accomplished, it's all insignificant in the end."
"Then what's so wrong with acting and escaping the fake world?" I asked.
"Well, even though you'd be awakening to a real world with real people, there's the fact that anything could happen. You could die or very well lose someone or something important.. nothing is perfect but everything is permanent." She finished.
"I see... well, what choice did the girl in your story go with?" I asked, wanting a conclusion.
"I... can't decide yet." She replied with a soft smile as she stared at me, "Why don't you help me decide?"
She stood up and stretched out a little, "Go to sleep if you think everything is perfect and that she should just... not act! And if you think she should act...
