Severance
Chapter 002
"Thank You."Eight o'clock in the morning - Arthur's alarm clock 'accidentally' goes off.
Nine o'clock in the morning - I hop in the shower and wash away the scent of fucking depression from the night before.
Ten o'clock in the morning - Pirates of the Caribbean still yearns my name. God, Elizabeth Swan is a beauty...
Eleven o'clock in the morning - I need more popcorn...
Two o'clock in the afternoon - I fell asleep, but I can't remember when... I need to get ready to head out and pick Jamie up asap. Damn!
Three o'clock in the afternoon - "Jamie! Do you like SmackDonalds?" I asked as she sat down in the passengers seat. I placed the bag with chicken nuggets on her lap and hit the reverse quickly. If I hurry, I'll manage to skip through traffic and get to the park before four.
"What's the hurry?" Jamie asked as she looked into the bag and pulled out the box of mcamazings.
"Just a whole day of showing you just how great I am!" I smiled, pressing down on the gas. I was barley going to hit 60 mph but I felt a thrill of excitement momentarily rush through me as I drove down the road.
"Why..?" She asked, somewhat confidently, yet at the same time, quite confidently. I was unsure how she was able to pull off that kind of tone.
"Liz is making me take care of you, kid, and even though I'm not the best person-" I looked around as I approached a red light and glanced around for any incoming cars.
"Go on..." She continued, raising a brow.
"No, that's it. I know I'm not the best person." I replied lamely, "But I'm sure as hell gonna be a better big sister than Liz is! Besides, she abandoned you on day one, so I'm basically already a better big sister.." I muttered the end.
"She won't be the only one." Jamie laughed lightly as she turned to look down at her phone.
I was quiet for a moment as I pondered my next statement. I have to be a little more gentle when approaching this kid.. for now. I have to be... stealthy. I have to... outdo her with my words and be sneaky.
"Are you talking about your boyfriend?" I asked, completely undermining me previous thought bubble.
Her head quickly popped up and her eyes widened, "What do you mean?" She asked quickly.
"He's.. leaving, isn't he?" I asked, keeping my eyes on the road rather than dare make eye contact with that ticking bomb.
"How do you know that?" She asked before furrowing her brows then looking back at me, "Arthur.. He told you, didn't he?" She sounded somewhat betrayed.
"No, actually I overheard a lot yesterday." I admitted as I slowly glanced over. Her eyes softened, "Oh, I see.." She said mellowly.
"I know I probably shouldn't have, but I do know what that feels like... To be left for months at a time and all." I said, hitting the nail in the head.
"Do you?"
"Yeah, Arthur leaves all the time. I have my bank account and all the pirates of the Caribbean movies to keep me preoccupied though, so that's cool."
She leaned back in her seat and her face morphed into a sad one as she looked down at her phone again, "He's leaving next week for a month or maybe two and-" She took in a deep breath and readjusted herself in the seat, oh no, she wasn't going to cry was she..?
"I force at least my regular 'I don't care, okay' face whenever he mentions that he's leaving, but it still hurts so much." She finished.
"That's what it felt like the first hundred times, too, but you get used to it, and eventually, your bank account and all the pirates movies begin to fill you with joy as the time passes by." I replied nonchalantly.
