Valerie's POV
Worry ate at my brain. I no longer had a job, so how could I afford anything. I still had a lot of leftover money from my previous job, but that wouldn't last forever.
I groaned. I needed a break from all of this stress. Maybe I should go to a bar, have some fun, drink, dance, maybe hook up.
“What am I thinking? I can't spend my money for some fun, I need to save it for more important things.” I talked to myself, a lot.
“Ugh, what am I going to do?!”
The back of my eyes and nose burned. A sign that I was about to cry. The minute my life turned to a better point, it went straight down again.
My phone rang. I would have to get rid of that as well, if I wanted my money to last longer.
Wiping my tears away and clearing my throat, I answered the call.
“Hello?” I asked.
“Hello, Valerie, it's Haiden.” His low voice sent goosebumps down my body, reminding me of that night days ago.
“Oh, hi, I didn't think you would ever call.”
“Well, I'm not one of those men that once they get what they want, they leave.”
I heart lurched. I honestly thought he was the kind of guy to do that. I mean after our make out, he didn't even attempt to call me. He just left. I was really hurt by that.
“Why do you sound like you've been crying?” My heart skipped a beat. He can't know.
“I'm not, I just have...allergies. You know, all the trees and grass get to me.” I mentally face-palmed. I was the worst liar ever.
“That's the worst lie I have ever heard. I'm coming over there.” His voice had a slight edge to it. He sounded angry.
“Wait, no-” The line went dead.
Shit, shit, shit! I am nowhere near ready to meet the handsome, rugged man again.
My hair was a mess, my breath smelled, and my hair probably looked so dead and tangled. At least I showered last night.
I ran into the bathroom and began my cleaning frenzy.
--
I was brushing my teeth when the doorbell rang. I panicked. My room was still a mess.
I fastened my pace and rinsed my mouth. Cleaning the toothbrush, I left it in a cup and dried my mouth.
I rushed out of the bathroom and went to open the door, but a cough interrupted me.
“Why were you crying?” I gasped and turned around, coming face to...chest with Haiden.
“How did you get in here?” I questioned. The door was locked.
“I have my ways. Now, why were you crying?” His finger tilted my chin up. I closed my eyes, not wanted him to see my red eyes. Even though my nose was for sure red and runny from my crying.
“Look at me.” My eyes slowly opened. He would find out sooner or later. I sniffed. Even with my stuffy nose, I could still smell his mouth-watering scent.
Our eyes locked into each other's. His were a bright blue-gray, I wished I had his eye color. It really stood out from his tanned skin.
He broke eye contact first, just so he could get a good look at my face. His large hand ran through my hair, making my eyes close at the sensation. I always loved it when people played with my hair because I always got this pleasant sensation run through my scalp and body.
