Chapter 5

[Jade's POV]

I hit the floor, as Nick tackled me to the ground.

"Hit the deck!" Benjamin yelled.

I watched as several bullets flew over our heads at the surrounding zombies. Inside the door were several turrets prepared to kill as many zombies as possible. Rolling onto my stomach, I aimed at one zombie attempting to help defend against this hoard of beasts. Screams of panic flew from Megan's and Claudia's lips as the zombies grew closer.

"My baby!" Emily cried!

As the turrets finally slowed, Benjamin ordered, "Everyone crawl in!"

Obeying his order, everyone moved swiftly. Except for Emily, who struggled with the weight of her baby hindering her!

"Anthony help your wife, we'll cover you," Benjamin yelled.

Clip after clip, I aimed and fired as trained by my bow and arrow instructor.

"Focus, Jade," I imagined Ms. Brooks say, "Now, release." With that thought, I released another round on the slowly approaching zombies. Their decayed features fell to the floor with each shot.

"Come on, Jade!" Jordan yelled.

Finally sliding in the entrance, Anthony and Derrick pulled the doors in trapping a zombie's arm in the act!

"Cut it off someone hurry!" Derrick screamed as the zombies hand caught the sleeve of his shirt.

"Quickly responding Kirsten grabbed a butcher knife out of her black boots slicing through the brittle exterior of the zombies arm.

"Derrick!" Emily panicked.

As the arm fell to the floor, the doors closed with a thud!

"Where's those chains, Nick?" Benjamin called out.

Without even responding, Nick ran to the door securing the chains and securing our lives.

Exasperated, we all laid on the floor breathing heavily. Huffs and puffs of air escaped out mouths, as our heartbeats slowed and our adrenaline retreated.

"Everyone okay?" Megan called out preparing to use her two years of medical school to do what she remembered.

After murmurs of assurance, it was clear that everything had turned out alright.

"It's not time to rest yet guys; we have to search this building and secure it's entrances. Remember to scavenge what you can." Benjamin yelled out!

On the long ride up here (and I do mean LONG), Benjamin instructed everyone on the process he wanted us to go through, and we planned out our protocol. It was decided that we would separate into groups of three, and we would plan from there depending on our surroundings. Besides me, my group consisted of Derrick, Claudia, and lastly Nick. In Jordan's group was Kirstin, and Anthony. Leaving Benjamin to care for Emily, Claudia's son, Ryan, and out closest thing to a nurse, Megan. We entered into a hallway which had rooms branching off on both sides.

"Anthony's group take the left side, Derrick's group the right. Remember in all instances make sure no one gets hurt. We can't be losing anyone. Better yet, we won't be losing anyone"

"Alright boss," responded everyone as we separated heading down the hall.

"Also, I can tell by how these turrets were set up, there's someone in this building find them and report back to me ASAP."

[Jordan's POV]

Leading the way, Anthony walked in front leaving me behind to talk to Kirsten. Luckily, it was a good thing.

"So, Kirsten when were you going to finally give me a chance?" I asked with a slight smirk on my face.

"Really Jordan? We just got ambushed by a clan of zombies, and you're thinking about me and you?"

"So, we do have a thing between us?"

"Weeellll, I wouldn't say that." she said with a little humor.

"Weeellll, what would you say?" I responded mimicking her speech.

"Shhh," Anthony inturrupted as he practiced his training he had obviously learned from being a policeman. He held his gun up aiming around corners as if he was an FBI agent preparing to catch a major criminal.

"Back to the subject Kirsten, could you give me a try?"

"I'll think about it, but right now let's focus on learning some tips from Agent 007," she said referring to Anthony who was weaving through doorways.

[Jade's POV]

After several minutes of scavaging the remainders of this so called safe haven, Nick and I fell back to talk. Several minutes of a few chuckles and giggles, the conversation to a quick turn.

"I know this may seem a little crazy, but I was just wondering if I was wrong?" Nick commented.

"Wrong about what," I responded clueless.

"Was I wrong for thinking that we could be something, like for real. I mean yeah, I did just meet you like three days ago, but I'm sure you see it too that we do have a connection."

"I guess, but it's the end of the world! There's no time for relationships and weddings and happy ever afters." I responded looking again into his eyes.

"Well, I say we should choose another way! We shouldn't give in up a regular life because of the zombie apocalypse. Everyone has given up, they have died inside. But I choose to live a better way."

"When you say it like that you're right!" I looked up to see Derrick and Claudia holding a casual conversation.

"If you even told me I was wrong for thinking that way, I wouldn't even care! Bottom line, I'm sure I'm not wrong, for having a vision of no more pain and struggle. Can you see a day where we no longer have to be scared to go out the house again? Can you see a life like our past? Can you see hope?"

"Honestly, I'm trying, but at this point I think I may need contacts to help see those things."

"Well don't worry, I'm sure things will get better," he said showing his beautiful smile. Making me slightly fall for him every second, I realized Nick was truly a nice guy.

"Nick," I called catching his attention, "How can you be so optimistic at a time like this?"

"I think a better question is how can you be so pessimistic?"

And with that last sentence we were silenced by a sudden voice yelling one word.

"Halt!"
