A Strange Acceptance

Ebony's P.O.V

I open the french doors to our new-modern home. "Mom, Dad, I'm home!" I yell into the house. (I know it's a bit cliche but I am home.) Huh, silence. They could be asleep, but it's only 6:24.

As I step further into the house I smell my moms cooking. I walk into the kitchen to find three plates of dinner sitting on our carved redwood table. Two of the green padded redwood chairs (one at each end) had been pulled back as if somebody had been sitting in them. I run up the stairs and check all of the rooms and bathrooms.

THEY'RE NOT HERE. I start to panic. I've never been one to completely break down, and I'm surprisingly calm for my situation.

Okay... This isn't strange at all. Calm down...calm down Ebony...calm...down. Good, now think. I could text them. I think to myself. But they wouldn't just leave dinner on the table untouched. I sit down to eat dinner without them when I see it. A white letter with shiny golden lining and a crimson seal with a Freestyle Script "P" on it sits right across from me on the other side of the golden candelabra. I reach over and grab it.

As I inspect the outside, my name appears in gold lettering. Panicking, I drop it and scoot away from it.
I pick it up with my finger and thumb, holding like it's got the Plague or something. It's heavier than a normal letter should be. Ever so slowly, I open it to examine its contents.
Since it's so heavy, I turn it upside down and a whole slew of things comes out that the small envelope definitely should not have been able to hold.

About ten books fall out, along with a letter. I pick up the letter and open it, reading it.
Ms. Jackson,
You have been cordially invited to attend The School of Paranormality for the school year of 2017-2018. The books you must have for the school year are enclosed in this envelope along with your list of classes for the semester. The train for The School of Paranormality will leave July 31 at 4:00. To get to the train, throw this letter at the wall, and a portal will appear. Step through it for the tracks.

We hope to see you here soon
Signed,
Headmaster Griff

I've never known or even seen my extended family, but I vaguely recall my mom talking about her maiden name, and Griff sounds a lot like it.... But I don't have time to worry about that right now I HAVE TO BE AT THAT TRAIN BY TOMORROW!!
