Chapter 13
Well, This Changes Everything
The lights on the plane were low with the majority of the passengers asleep. The flight crew occasionally walked down the aisles, checking on those of us who were awake. I have to admit I was a little rude when one woman got to me, waving her off and keeping my eyes down at Lorraine's journal, which I'd been thoroughly engrossed in since we took off from London heading for Tokyo. Don't get between me and a book, even if it's just to ask me if I want something to drink.
Why we were going to Tokyo exactly, I still didn't know. Cruz and Kenna, who were asleep in the seats behind us, had only said we were going to meet some of their contacts in the city, that they had information on Vince and the Order's movements. Though I tried to get them to talk, Drake let them keep it a secret for now, probably because we hadn't gotten any sleep in the last twenty-four hours and he just wanted to get on the plane. He fell asleep with his head on my shoulder five minutes after takeoff.
Me? I was too wired to sleep. How could I not be when John and Emmy now knew we were alive? Yes, we'd all agreed not to go to them until this was all over, but just having them know...it felt so much better now that they didn't have to grieve our loss anymore.
So instead of sleeping like Drake was, softly snoring in my ear, I was up reading Lorraine's journal. Of course, I had to bite the inside of my cheek to prevent myself from letting out a squeal at the cute Jesse parts, but when I got to the entry from January 30, 1925, I couldn't help but jump.
This caused Drake to immediately wake up, having thrown him off me in act.
"Wha' is it?" he asked groggily, eyes not even open.
"Drake, we've got a huge problem," I told him in a whisper.
"Hmm?"
I looked over just as he opened his eyes sleepily.
"Jesse and Lorraine never got to hide the third key. Gail Peters was able to get it from them...and I'll bet Vince and the Order still has it."
That woke him up.
Rather than letting him read up to where I'd gotten, I gave him the short version. After catching him up, I held the journal between us on the arm rest and we started reading the second half of the entries together.
"They never got it back," he stated once we finished.
"And it looks like they tried everything to...including something that got them arrested and Wesley had to bail them out."
"What are we going to do now?" he groaned, putting his hand over his eyes.
Kenna poked her head in between our seats. "What are we going to do now about what?"
I quickly told her about what happened with Lorraine and Jesse and that the Order had their key rather than it being hidden. As I did, Cruz leaned forward, too, resting his chin on the top of Kenna's head to hear.
"Well, isn't that just fucking fantastic!" she grimaced. "That prick's family has probably been laughing for the last ninety or so years."
"Well, good thing is, they don't have to other two or the book to do any damage with."
"Um, they still do plenty of damage," Cruz stated, one eyebrow raised.
"And I'd like to do more damage to their faces..."
"Kenna."
"Sorry." She grinned, totally not sorry.
"About these contacts you guys say were going to see...who are they exactly and what are they supposed to help us with?"
