Matt and Addison had to go home at six. Mom wanted them to stay for dinner, but we were all full of cupcakes. Mom packed up a cupcake for each of them to take home. I went straight up to my room after they left and flicked on my laptop. I searced "summer horse riding camps" and found one right outside of town that was one week long, and anyone could go for a fee of $100. I called Mom and told her about it, and she told me I could sign up, but to wait for Summer.
Exausted, I went to sleep. Instantly I started dreaming about school and how life was going to be like though the years. The dream gradually turned into a nightmare. I only remembered bits and pieces of it, but I knew it was scary. I dreamt that my best friend from New York had been in a car accident, and that she was in the hospital in critical condition. I woke up with a jump to the sound of the phone ringing, with a bad feeling in my gut.
"H-hello?" I said when I answered the phone. "Yes, this is Kathryn... wait... slow down... what happened?... oh, uh, okay... oh, no! NOT SHANNON! NO!!!" Mom came running in to my room at the sound of my voice.
"What's wrong?" she asked worriedly after I hung up the phone.
"Sh-shan-non," I was speaking in gulps between sobs. "Shan-non wa-s in a terr-i-ble ca-r ac-cident a-and he's in cri-tical co-nditi-on..."
"Oh, no... honey, I'm so sorry. I know he's your best friend." I layed against her arm and cried and cried until I fell back asleep.
I woke up to the rooster's call at dawn. I was surprised to see Mom sitting in my desk chair.
"Pack your bags." She said sternly. I was about to ask why, then she said, "We're going to New York."
