"Daniel Howell, why have I just received a letter that you haven't attended classes the past two weeks?"

Dan cringed as his mother yelled at him through the phone. She was going to find out sooner or later, but he didn't think his university would actually mail his mother. For the past two weeks, Dan has been moving his stuff out of his dorm and into Phil's apartment. It was strange, Phil was very accepting of the boy's life choice and has been helping him find a new career.

Everything was going smoothly until his mother found out.

"You know, you're lucky the university is giving you a second chance. They said if you return to your classes now, you'll pass your classes with a C."

The boy sighed and looked at his new bedroom. "Mum, I don't think I'm going back. I," He paused and bit his lip before speaking again. "I don't think uni is for me."

There was a pause on the phone and Dan was terrified. Never had him mom been so furious, she was out of words. Dan squeezed his eyes shut, waiting for her to yell, but it never came.

"You're going to throw away your life like that?" She said calmly through the phone. "Do you know how expensive tuition is? Do you know how much of an influence you are to your brother? Dan, what are you doing?"

The boy let out a sigh and laid down on the couch in the living room. He held the phone to his ear and bit the inside of his cheek. "I don't think law is my thing. I'm staying with a friend and I'm going to find a job."

"Your father is not going to be happy."

"Dan," Phil called out. "I'm hungry, do you want pizza?"

The boy sat in his room with his door closed. His hands were tangled in his short wavy hair and gripping it slightly. He was stressing about college and how his stepfather would react. Obviously, he wouldn't react well considering how Dan's mother took the news.

"Dan?" The man asked again, this time knocking softly.

This time Dan parted his lips as he stared at the door. He didn't know what to tell Phil, he was even ashamed of how he reacted yesterday. Phil was kind enough to let the boy stay at his flat and yet Dan was doing what he was best at: ruining friendships.

He dropped his hand that gripped to his hair and softly closed his eyes. "Yeah, Phil?"

"Can I come in?"

Dan didn't say anything as the door opened and Phil's long legs carefully stepped in the room. He avoided eye contact as he was afraid of what the man would think of him. Dan knew he couldn't hide forever, but he just wanted to be alone, even if it was unfair to anyone else.

"What's going on? Is everything okay?" The man asked.

He shook his head and sighed. "My mom found out, she's going to tell my stepdad and he's going to go ape-shit."

Phil nodded and gave him a soft smile. "Let's go out to get pizza, then. You can be less anxious about your phone that way. What do you say?"

Dan looked up at the man and smiled back. It was probably the first smile he's been able to manage since yesterday. He closed his eyes for a second, then opened them again, as if with a blink of an eye caused his worries to disappear. Dan sat up from the bed and nodded.

"Are you ready? I'm pretty hungry."
