It has been an hour since I received the news about my current health situation. I've just been staring at the walls thinking, why me? Why did he choose to do this to me? Cancer? Am I going to die? What about the baby? I'm not ready to be a mother, I'm only sixteen. What about Luke? How will this affect him? Luke was also sitting in the chair staring off. He hasn't said anything since the doctor left us with the news. We've just been sitting here quietly.
Luke's POV
Why her? She's so new, so innocent. All she wanted was a normal life. To get her parents back. I'll kill him. If I ever find him I'll kill him. Cancer? Why cancer? Wow. I'll be there for that baby. It will have a father like figure. I'll always be here for her, for them both.
There was a knock on the door.
Claire's POV
There's a knock on the door. It was followed by Doctor Morris. "Hey sweetie. How are you holding up?" "I could be better, doc." I replied honestly. "Well I have some good news and some not to terrible news." Luke looked at me. I smiled back at him, trying to give him calmness. I looked back at the doctor. "Bad news first, please." He nodded. "You have stage one Papillary and Follicular thyroid cancer. Without treatment soon with it being in the early stages, it can spread and cause complications. It's not genetic. In fact, no one is for sure just what causes it; except radiation does help it start." "I haven't been around a lot of radiation." "Well that's my the only cause. We don't know other causes but they are out there. Now the good news is it is obviously treatable. It's a lump on the thyroid gland that can be removed by surgery or you can be treated with chemotherapy. We will highly suggest doing chemotherapy until surgery if you plan to do that. "Okay. How much will surgery be?" I asked. "I can only give you an estimate from past procedures. Somewhere around 900-1100 dollars." My mouth dropped. Luke finally spoke up, "When would be the closest date for surgery?" Doctor Morris looked at his calendar then replied, "The next available date would be next month on the twentieth." "She can do that." He quickly responded. "Luke, I don't have that kind of money. I don't think I can do that day doc." "No, Claire I got it. I'll have the payments covered." I smiled at him admiringly. "Luke, you don't have to do that. I can't possibly ask you to do such a thing." "You're not asking, I'm offering. Babe, I want to do this more than anything. Please let me." I smiled, then looked at the doctor. "The twentieth you said?" He nodded. "Then I guess, put me down for the twentieth ,doc." He nodded. "Very well. You're all set. You may leave now." With that he left the room. I got dressed and gathered my things. We started walking to the car. "You're gonna be okay. It'll all be okay." We got in the car and drove silently to the RAG. He walked me to my room. "So it's late I guess your going on home now." I said. He looked around. "Ya. I actually have to go somewhere." "Oh really, at this hour? Where?" He looked nervous. "Just somewhere. I'll see you later. Okay?" "Okay." He kissed me. "I love you, Claire Miles." I smiled and kissed him. "I love you too, Luke Maylen." He started walking towards the elevator. "Luke?" I called out to him. He turned around. "Yea?" "Don't kill him. I know what he did is unforgivable ,but I don't want you to go to prison." He smiled and nodded. "I won't." He turned back and went to the elevator. I watched him get in and wave as the doors shut. I waved back. I went inside and to my surprise Jamie was still awake and Daniel wasn't there. She saw me and immediately jumped up. "Hey! Luke told me you were in the hospital. Is everything okay?" She hugged me. I started to tear up. "It's a long story ,Jamie." She smiled caringly. "I'll make the coffee and you get comfortable. Meet back in ten?" I nodded. "Sounds like a plan." I went to my room.
Luke's POV
I drove up to a house about thirty minutes away from the RAG. There was music blaring from it. Cars were parked everywhere. Guys and girls were drinking and standing around outside and inside. I got out and walked towards the door. I was greeted by Tyler Gensyn. "Hey Luke. Long time no see man!" He shook my hand. "Yea. I'd say it's been a while." "So what brings you here?" I looked around. "Well I was actually looking for a friend of yours, Austin Harris." He laughed. "What kind of trouble is he in now?" "Well it's nothing with the law, I'll tell you that." "Alright man. He's out in the back, around the pool." I nodded. "Thanks man. See ya." "See ya, Luke." I walked straight to the back. I saw Austin dancing with some girl. I walked straight over to them. I tapped Austin's shoulder, "Mind if I cut in?" He turned around and I punched him in his face as hard as I could. He stumbled back and smirked. "I was wondering when you'd show up." "Let's talk." "What about?" He wore a smug look on his face. "Don't play dumb, Austin. I will sock you again!" "Alright ,Luke. Let's talk." "Why'd you do it?" He laughed. "Austin, I swear I will make you bleed worse than you already are. Don't try me. You know what I'm capable of." "Okay fine. I did it because I can. I did it because she's beautiful and I wanted her. I got her." My face got hot and I tensed up. "All you did was get her knocked up!" "Oh please, she's not knocked up! Your just jealous you didn't get her first." I punched him and then kicked him in his dark place. He kneeled over in pain ,but I picked up his arms and threw him against the house. "Now you listen to me and you listen good! If you ever come near or even touch my girl again I will-kill you! You had your fun. You had your games. You're done! You hear me?" He smiled. "Got it, Romeo." I pushed back and started walking away. "Luke! Why don't you just kill me now. It certainly wasn't hard for you to kill Brandon." I stiffened and turned to face him. "Because Claire asked me not to. Because she's a good person, she doesn't need this." "Since when do you care about what your "girl" thinks?" "Because I love her! And I will do anything for her." "Is she really knocked up?" I flinched at those words. "Yea. She's pregnant." "I didn't mean for that to happen." I shook my head. "What else do you expect to happen, dirt bag?" "Hey! Watch it okay!? I don't want to be a dad anymore she does a mom!" I walked up and put my finger in his face. "Oh you are not a dad! You may have helped make that baby ,but as far as I'm concerned or Claire, you are nothing but a doner!" With that I turned around and went straight to my car. Before I had a chance to speed off, I saw a note stuck to my dash. I read it.
Don't just think you can waltz in here picking on one of us. I've got a job for you. I'll be in touch.
I crumbled up the note and trew it in the floor and sped out of there and back to the RAG.
