"Jamie, I don't need all these vegetables!" It has been a few weeks since I found out the news. I have a baby bump that sticks out and is noticeable. My baby is growing fast. Jamie is making me breakfast and instead of the normal breakfast items like pancakes, bacon and sausage; she is making me all sorts of vegetables. Who's even heard of a Cherimoya? It's native to South America, not North America. Exactly. "Claire Miles, vegetables are great for you and the baby!" I grunted. "Luke, tell her something!" He was looking out the window. "Give her what she wants, Jamie." She huffed. "Fine! I'll make you bacon on the side. But that's as far as I'm going!" I smiled. "Thank you." I walked over to Luke and placed my hand on his shoulder. He jerked a little. "Oh, hey. You okay?" He asked. He put his hand on my baby bump. "We are good. Are you okay?" "Yea of course, why wouldn't I be?" "Luke, you've been all out of sorts for a few weeks now. What happened that night you left?" He looked down and back at me. "Let's take a walk." I nodded. "Jamie, we'll be back!" I yelled. "Okay!" She yeslled back. We walked out of the door and started walking down the hall. "So I feel like I should tell you a bit about my past. I'm not the same man today that I was back then. This was four years ago, I was fourteen. Austin and I were actually really great friends. We were in a gang together. The one he's still part of. I never killed anyone, but I do blame myself for a death. The guys and I were playing around one night, it was me, Austin, Brandon, and Jordon. We were daring each other to do things. It was snowy outside and ice was everywhere, I was dared to do doughnuts on the part of the road with the most ice. I did it and almost flipped. Here's the other part, you have to dare the next person to do something worse than what you just did. So the next person was Brandon. I had to dare him. I dared him to go sixty all the way down the road and back. Knowing that it was bad out there, he still accepted. You could back out of a dare ,but you had to go naked all the way down the road. No one was having that happen. So he did it. He sped down that road. Within two minutes we heard a crash. Everyone fled but me. I ran up the road to find him crashed into a brick building. The front end totally crushed in. There was no way he was alive. I went up to the door yelling his name. There was no answer. I called the cops and the paramedics. He was decapitated and his body was crushed. To this day not everyone knows the story. All I told the cops was that, we were just hanging out and decided to go sixty up the road of ice. They called us ignorant and to never do it again. I will never. I was involved in some pretty big things. I helped rob a store once and I was part of a hostage situation. When I turned sixteen I left the gang and joined the RAG. I've been doing good since. I will never go back. The other night I went to find Austin. I knew where to find him. I went to this old house the gang used to hang out at. Saw an old friend and found Austin in the back. I gave him a piece of my mind and threw a punch or two, then headed back to the car. When I got in there was a note. They are coming for me, babe. They want me to do a job for them. I've talked to the director and we are going to figure something out. For now, I am to stay in the building and on the RAG grounds at all times." I took a deep breath and tried to grasp everything he just told me. "Okay, so you were part of a gang, but your a changed man. Now they want you to do a job ,but your not. You're in danger." "Basically." He answered honestly. I laughed a little. "Okay. This doesn't change anything with us though. If you say your never going back, I believe you." He nodded and pulled me in for a hug. He kissed me. "Luke, I need to find my parents." "Oh yes, the main reason your at the RAG. I've been looking in on that. I actually know exactly where they are." I jumped back. "Are you serious!? Luke, your amazing!" He laughed. "Thanks. Yes, I've been doing a lot of research ever since you got here. We can leave out right after your surgery." I grabbed him and kissed him. "Have I mentioned lately how much of an amazing boyfriend you are?" He laughed. "Well no, but another kiss would tell me." I giggled and kissed him again. We walked back to the room. I get to find my parents. I get to be with them again!
A weeklater
"Alright now ,Claire, we are going to place a monitor on your stomach for the baby and one on your heart for you. We don't want anything to go wrong during this procedure." Said the doctor as they placed the equipment on me. "Now keep in mind, this cancer can come back more aggressively. This surgery should take care of it, but sometimes it happens. Okay?" "Okay ,doc." I answered. They placed a mask over my nose and mouth. "Okay now take a deep breath." I inhaled and only remember hearing the words, "Stay calm." I was out.
I woke up in a room surrounded by Luke, Jamie, and Daniel. "Hey there beautiful." Said Luke. "Hey ,Claire!" Jamie shouted excitedly. "Sup." Greeted Daniel. "Hey you guys." "How are you feeling, babe?" "I feel- drugged." Daniel laughed. "Oh man, they have you drugged up. I need to get more of this stuff." I rolled my eyes. "Hey, our tickets are bought, we leave out in a month to find your parents." Luke whispered. The doctor walked in before I could reply. "Claire, I need to speak with you." "Okay. What's up ,doc?" He sighed. "When we were doing the surgery, we found that the cancer has spread. So we did an MRI and found that it has spread from you thyroid gland to behind your neck on your brain stem. Its not a lot but its growing at a good pace. We would have to do surgery again along with chemotherapy once a week." I sighed. Luke I think is having a panic attack ,and Jamie and Daniel are silently watching. "Well ,doc, I'll have to plan that surgery for two months away. I have a trip to attend to and I can not get out of it." "Actually Claire, we can only do this particular surgery after the baby is born, or there's a chance of loosing the baby." "Alright then that's what we'll do." "Claire, your cancer will get worse, and painful. Within a few months you will be struggling to do even the simplest things." "That's okay. As long as my baby lives." He shook his head and signed again. "Alright. We will plan the surgery the day the little one is born." I nodded in agreement. I looked at everyone. They all looked frightened as was I. "Guys, it is scary, but I know everything will work out. It'll be okay." Luke looked at me, "I don't want to loose you." "Don't talk like that. It'll be okay."
But the feeling inside me, I knew it probably wouldn't be.
