"How is he?"

Caspian awoke to the sound of low voices, from what he heard there were three people talking. One was obviously a girl's voice, that sounded almost familiar, but he couldn't quite place it. A gravely voice and a higher pitched voice.

"Better." The higher voice said.

"What's that supposed to mean?!" That was the girl talking.

"Well, he's not dead. That's for sure." The higher pitched voice.

"Wish he was." It was the gravelly voice.

"Shut up, Nikabrik!" The girl whined.

"Just saying..."

"If you ever suggest such a thing again, I'll go... I'll leave."

"Fine with me."

"Nikabrik! Stop! Mafalda, act your age!"

"Fine!" Both voices said in unison.

Caspian thought hard, Mafalda... where had he heard such a name.

/flashback/

"Oh, Caspy! Isn't this exciting?!" The fourteen year old girl exclaimed, Caspian, still a young boy of ten, looked at the log 'boat' in confusion.

"Does it even float?" He asked, squinting at it.

The girl rolled her eyes and and glared at him.

"Are you scared, I bet you're just scared." She taunted.

"Mafffffie!" Caspian whined. Maffie smirked.

"You always want to hear stories about King Edmund and his brother and sisters, they voyaged all over!"

"But that thing," Caspian pointed at the hollowed out log, "won't float."

"Yes it will. Watch."

Maffie slowly pushed the boat off the shore. Caspian watched in awe as it floated across the small pond.

"When I grow up I'm going to sail across the seas." She said proudly.

"MAFALDA! COME HERE THIS MOMENT!!"

Maffie's face fell and she slowly rowed back to shore, she glanced at Caspian, he bit his lip.

"Coming, Uncle Miraz!" She called, running up the bank. She bowed slightly to her aunt and uncle.

"Mafalda, why are you talking about sailing? Our people aren't sailors, we're carvers and fighters."

"But-"

"Silence! Child, you are filling Caspian's head with nonsense. We don't need his daydreaming."

"But uncle! I-"

"Mafalda! Hush!" Miraz yelled.

She went silent. He stood up and looked down at her.

"You're fourteen years old. You are practically of age to be married off, and we have been discussing that you are becoming more and more unmanageable. We think it is best if we work on finding you a husband." He took her arm roughly and walked further and further away until they were out of earshot.

Caspian never saw her again.

/end flashback/

Suddenly a sound beside made him jump he opened his eyes and saw a girl with long nearly-black hair and eyes the same colour as his.

"M-Maffie?" He gasped out. She smiled and laughed.

"Yep, little Caspy's not so little now is he?" She smirked. He sat up and hugged her tightly.

"It's really you. Maffie they told me you were dead."

Maffie pulled back, Caspian saw tears threatening to fall.

"But I didn't. Miraz tried to sell me off to some prince was who knows where. I ran away." She explained. Caspian nodded, confused.

She blinked again and a single tear dripped down her cheek.

"I was so afraid that you would be just like him." She whispered.

Caspian laughed a little unsteadedly.

"How could I?"

"I don't know. I just hope the kings and queens get here soon."
