The bell rang, jerking me awake. Not that the shivers passing through me when she told me her name wouldn't have. Everyone rushed to leave while I just sat there, always the last one out. But this time I had a better reason than just being too lazy or too into a book to not get up. My body just wouldn't move, I felt like jelly.

"Do you have any questions Rowan?" Mr. Torrentino asked. No, I never have any. I think the last time I asked a question in math class was never.

"No, thank you."

"Well then, you have to go."

Rude, but true. I willed my legs to move, pushed myself up off the chair. I slung my messenger bag across my shoulder and walked away, the whole time feeling like I was floating. I went out through the double doors at the end of the hall that led outside to the parking lot. I looked around for James' car, but couldn't find it. I walked around for a while till I spotted it, then started walking towards it. I opened the car door and sat, forgetting to say hello to him.

"'Hi James! How was your day today? Thank's so much for the ride big bro'."

"Oh. Sorry...lot on my mind." I said, feeling distant as I looked out the window. Why couldn't I shake off this feeling? James started the car and was backing up when I saw Her. She was walking briskly, with two big guys in black muscle shirts and dark jeans following behind her at a slower pace. For some reason I knew something was off. She stopped walking and turned around, I could feel the tension. They started talking to her and I could tell she really wanted out. "James, can we pick up a friend right now? She's right over there."

"Yeah sure, where?" I pointed to where she was and James drove. He didn't seem to notice anything wrong. As we were passing he slowed the car and I rolled down my window.

"Meaghan?" I didn't know what else to say. I just hoped she would understand what I was trying to do. She turned and our eyes met. Again I couldn't breathe. I got lost in their clear beauty. She smiled, showing off bright white teeth, the bottom canines accentuated a little bit more than the top. I don't know why I notice these things. She didn't even say goodbye to the men, just walked away and got into the car. James started driving.

"Where to?" He asked. I turned around to look at Meaghan. She shrugged, a silent smile playing on her lips.

"Just go home." I said, still staring at that beautiful smile.

"Kay." James turned on the tape full blast, we didn't usually listen to the radio. Blood Red Shoe's You Bring Me Down began playing, and I couldn't help but beat my feet along with the drums and nod my head to Laura's guitar. She was one damn, sexy lady. I was glad for the music—it meant I didn't have to make conversation. We got home pretty soon since we didn't live very far from the school. James stopped in front of our house, but didn't turn the car off. "I have to go to work and Camila's in Art Club today." I nodded and got out as Meaghan did too. James waved goodbye as he sped off. I started walking across the lawn and opened the door, letting Meaghan in first. I sighed as I came in after her, dropping the bag on the couch in the living room like I always did. I turned to ask her if she wanted something to eat, but she was eyeing my cello.

"You play?" She asked in that voice, rich and velvet.

"Yeah." I didn't know what to do. I might just kiss her.

"Can you play me something?" I couldn't look away from the way her hands caressed the wood of the cello. I walked over to the cello, took it gently from her delicate hands and sat down, getting ready. I breathed in, then out. I guess I shouldn't be nervous, I love playing, but I can't help it. She's right there, eyes expectant. I picked up the bow and began playing Erik Satie's Gymnopedie I. And I forgot she was there. That always happened when I played. I moved with the music, my hands caressing the chords and dancing with the bow. It always made me feel so alive...made me forget who I was and...I could feel the tears from the realization that music was the only thing that could set me free. I never stopped playing, pretended the tears where part of the music, pretended I was fine, and I believed it. There was nothing wrong with me, I was happy, as long as I played. Then the song ended. I was back in the living room, she was in front of me, eyes watered, still clear as a mountain lake. I wanted to start playing, to get lost again, but those eyes pulled me back, and I was on solid ground again. She cupped my cheek, and wiped a tear away with her thumb. I couldn't help but close my eyes and press into her hand. It felt so obvious, my attraction to her. But she didn't take her hand back. She left it there and I didn't dare open my eyes. The spell might break. But I did anyway, putting the cello to the side, carefully. Can't dream of what you can't have. I saw that her face was closer than comfort, and I was glad. I began to get that sinking feeling at the pit of my stomach. "Can you feel it in you?" She whispered, her other hand on my heart, the other still on my face. I couldn't say anything. But I could feel it stirring, that bird inside me.

"Let the raven out." She whispered, her eyes full of emotion piercing into mine. She was on top of me now. Let the raven out. But how? I wanted her to kiss me, I needed her to. Her warmth was addictive. I heard the garage door opening and she got off, sighing. Sarah and John had just gotten home. I felt a little mad, why did they have to ruin it? I got up from the couch, craving her body so close to mine again. The back door opened and John walked in, groceries in tow. Sarah came in afterward, checking over the receipt.

"Hey kiddo." John said, and I wasn't mad anymore. How could I be? They were my family, my home. "Hey." He said to Meaghan.

"Oh hi! Sorry, didn't see you there. Welcome to our home." Sarah said, her eyes gleaming. It had been a while since I'd had friends over. Meaghan smiled and said hi. But other than that she was quiet. I knew they would take her for shy and not impolite. They put the groceries in place and then went upstairs to watch TV.

"I have to go." She said, grabbing her stuff. I walked her to the door because I didn't know what to say or do to make her stay. I opened the door for her and she walked out. Just then a black, sleek sports car stopped in front of my house and she headed towards it.

"Wait, who were those guys?" I asked before she got to the car, I needed to know. She stopped but didn't turn around.

"....Family."
