Okay

So I was reading this give that dealt with abuse and I realized it was pretty inaccurate, as a lot of stories are when people who haven't dealt with abuse write them. I figured this might help fellow writers write things like this accurately, especially in this fandom with John Laurens and Maria having abusive head cannons.
The only reason I can give advice like this is because I've dealt with abuse to some extent, so I'm not trying to be stuck up or anything. It also may be different for other people, because everyone's situation is different, so if you have anything to add please do so. Also if you're easily triggered by abuse then please don't read this.

I also have some examples at the end that are like fanfics so if you want to read them I guess they're like one shots.

While with the abuser: so at first, an abusive relationship starts out like a normal one. Abusers don't begin to abuse right away. The abuse starts in my experience once a commitment is made, whether that be getting married, moving in, or anything else like that. This gives the abuser control, because the victim is now more dependent on them.
The first time an abuser takes action, its usually a shock. At this point, the victim either leaves right away, or loves the abuser too much to do so. This shock comes for the first few times, but it's softened because the abuser can switch from beating them to cuddling them in a matter of seconds.
After a while of this, a cycle starts to form. The victim goes from pretending everything is fine, to being depressed about their situation, to standing up to their abuser.
During the pretending stage, the victim usually feels happy. They convince themselves that everything is normal, and that their abuser is actually a great person. They can even feel guilty for thinking of their abuser in a bad way.
Then the abuser will attack again, and the victim becomes depressed. They feel hopeless, because they feel like there's no way out of the relationship. They're too scared to ask for help, so they silently suffer. If there's a time where a victim would be suicidal, this would be it.
Then, the abuser does something that makes the victim angry. This could be destroying something special, harming them severely, or going to far with insults, anything of importance. This causes the victim to take action, whether that be by fighting back or altogether leaving.
If they get out, they could get help from loved ones and leave the situation entirely. But often, they turn back to the abuser. The abuser promises that they'll do better, and that they're sorry, and the victim feels guilty and comes back, starting the cycle all over again.
This cycle could continue until the victim decides to leave this toxic situation.

I found these comics on tumblr, and they're both very accurate. The first one has actually happened to me when I spilled a glass of water at my grandmother's. Even though the victim is away from the abuser, they still live in fear that their friends and family will become abusive. After all, their abuser was normal at first.
They often have trust issues and commitment issues. For a while, I didn't trust anyone at all, not even the people that helped me out of the situation.
Victims can also be triggered by strange things that the abuser said or did when they weren't being abusive, because it reminds them of their abuser. For me, I can't listen to the monster mash song without feeling a little anxiety. This could be really anything, a song, a piece of clothing, even a type of food or certain location.
The best thing for friends and lived one's of the victim to do when this happens is to get them away from the trigger item and comfort them.

I hope this advice helps my fellow writers. Now, here's some examples of the certain stages. I'm going to use Maria and James Reynolds and John and Henry Laurens to portray them. Once again, if abuse is a touchy subject for you, please read at your own risk.

Pretending stage:

"Jacky, how about we go out and get some ice cream." John looked at his father warily. He usually didn't act this nice.
They were soon at the local ice cream shop, both with a cone in hand. John happily licked his ice cream while watching the sun slowly set.
John wondered why he ever feared his dad. Sure, he lost his temper and acted out sometimes, a slap or a cruel insult, but it was only when John misbehaved. Altogether, he was happy. He sat back and enjoyed the moment if peace while it lasted.

Depression stage:

John sank to the ground, sobbing and holding his head in pain. It was hopeless, absolutely hopeless. It's not like he had anywhere to run, and he was too young to go any where. He didn't even have the courage to tell his friends about his situation. He was trapped.

Stand up stage:

That was the last time he would hit her. Maria had had enough. "That's it, James, I'm done with all of this! You don't get to treat me like this any more! I'm leaving."
Not bothering to gather her things, she walked out the door, not knowing where to go, but knowing she had to go somewhere.
"You'll regret this, slut," James called after her, shaking his fist in the air. Maria didn't bother to look back as she marched off.

Anyways I hope thus helped some people out. I know a lot of people say things like this, but if you need any advice, I'm always here to talk to. I just hope this helps people's stories be more accurate. K BYE
