None of them were visible when she wore her school uniform, so the inspiration of the tattoos never found out. She knew it was for Sammy Valdez, her best friend.
The maple leaf for his first word "syrup," a fire because, well, Hazel didn't quite know about that... but the horse was for Sammy's first job at the stables.
She almost died when he took her there for her birthday and kissed her on the cheek...
The next day she left, and never saw him again.
What she didn't know was that he believed his tattoos were about her too, but it turns out they were about his future wife instead.
He never forgot Hazel though.
When Hazel was living a terrible life in Alaska, being tortured by her possessed mother, her tattoos kept her going, she knew one day she'd get back to Sammy.
When she died, well, she started sobbing as soon as she got to the Fields of Asphodel.
She never got her life, she never got her happily ever after.
Then she notcied something very strange: she was the only spirit in the fields who still had tattoos.
She finally knew why when Nico brought her back to life. Her tattoos weren't meant for Sammy, they were a prophecy about her future love.
