The light eventually succumbed to the darkness, but Asuna and I had no choice but to keep walking. We were so close, after all. It seemed like the cavern was never ending and I assumed the reason why it was built like this was to lead challengers astray and get them lost, so Asuna and I stuck together like glue.
"Wow, when do you think we get to the dungeon?" Asuna asked me, her voice echoing.
"I have no clue, I hope soon." I replied. I felt an uneasiness come over me as I heard more frightening noises that almost sounded like cries of distress. Like the past swordsmen I thought.
"Kirito..." Asuna looked right at me.
"I know...maybe it's just what the Virus sounds like... or maybe there's monsters in the cavern..." I said. "Just...be on your guard." Asuna nodded and she kissed me lightly on the cheek, making my face turn a little red. I heard the metal blades make a loud SHING as our swords collided a little. The agonizing noise became louder. We cautiously walked, obviously distressed and confused as to what was going on. I hoped to finally see some light to brighten our path that we walked, and to finally know where to find the dungeon in this absolute maze of a cave. It seemed like we walked for hours, and the first glimpse of light we saw was like the feeling of finally drinking water after walking in a desert for months. We were so relieved...for 0.5 seconds. A huge cry rang out in my ears. Asuna and I both ducked and covered our ears, as we closed our eyes instantly. When we finally drew them slowly open again we were finally...finally...in a large room with shards of gem sticking out from the ground like a sword plunged through a torso. The entire room was alight with a purple...flame...it seemed like, and the walls looked like a pixely grid. I heard a sob come from behind one of the gen shards that stuck out, taller than my avatar was. Asuna and I gulped and looked at eachother. I started to breathe heavily.
"I-is someone there?" Asuna called out.
"D-don't call out to it, what if you're just leading the virus right to us?" I whisper shouted.
"Kirito! Someone is crying! It sure doesn't sound like a monster to me!" She reasoned with me smartly. She called out again and we finally saw a head poke out from the large gem. I stared in disbelief as the small figure walked out towards us.
"M-mama...p-papa?"Right there. Standing right in front of the both of us...was Yui. Asuna burst into tears as she ran up to her.
"Yui!" She squealed, her voice filled with joy. Yui smiled at her.
"Mama! I missed you!" She said cutely. Asuna attempted to hug her but as I got close Yui looked at me and pointed.
"Papa!" She beamed. I felt tears pouring down my cheeks as she ran up to me. Asuna was still sobbing too. Yui looked up at both of us and finally ran to me and hugged me tightly. I cried even more, of joy and relief.But...as if the devil had planned it...
It felt like my heart broke apart. As Yui let go of me she hurried back towards the gemstone again. I looked at her in disbelief and watched as a long...painful...red streak went down across my arm, ripping up my armor that was around the area.
"It's... fake?" I said doubtfully. Asuna shook her head as she looked at what seemed to be Yui, the figure lagging, the pixels breaking slightly, then rebuilding themselves.
"Th-that's not Yui... that's the Virus!!" I yelled out loud.Asuna was still basically pinned to the ground and crying, it hurt to see her. The Virus, still in Yui's form was crying out.
"M-mama! It hurts!" She yelled in agony, thrashing back against the gem. Asuna got up instantly and scrambled after her. I grabbed her shoulder and held her back harshly.
"YUIIIII!!" Asuna shrieked, wrestling out of my grip. "PLEASE, NO!!"
"ITS NOT REAL, ASUNA, THAT'S NOT OUR DAUGHTER!!!" I screamed as Asuna cried and yelled pleadingly, trying to run after her as her figure was alternating. For a few more moments, I looked into the eyes of Yui and was almost fooled, but we had no choice. We had to destroy this Virus.
"ITS NOT YUI, ASUNA, THE VIRUS IS TRYING TO FOOL US!!!" I screamed as I recollected everything we had been told about the Virus. "THAT LITTLE GIRL...THE ONE PEOPLE SAID THE VIRUS HAD POSSESSED...THAT WAS YUI!!" Asuna sobbed even more as I finally attempted to yank her to the floor.
"Y-Yui..." she said weakly, clawing at the ground.
"Asuna, you have to listen to me!" I ordered in a rash tone. Asuna cried as she stumbled upward, me at her side as she went up to the virus and drew out her sword.
"M-mama..." it stuttered, so convincingly.
Asuna shut her eyes and was about to attack.
"I-I can't do it!" She stammered.
"ASUNA, I TOLD YOU, IT'S. NOT. HER!!" I screamed. Asuna sobbed as her sword plunged through the figure of the Virus, a pixelated streak running down the front of the childlike figure.
"AGHHHH!!!" The harrowing scream that let out form the figure of Yui made Asuna throw herself back into me and sob endlessly.
"Mama...why?" The Virus groaned weakly, as a health bar showed up, running down into the yellow.
"N-no..." Asuna slowly breathed into my chest. She cried, devastated, and I had to pull her off of me and ordered her to attack again. It hurt me too, it was almost like it was me torturing her.
"Kirito...please..." Asuna cried. I clutched her tightly and gave her a quick look, before I ran out to do it myself. I shoved my sword into the virus as it howled out in Yui's voice. As I watched the health bar go fully down, the figure of our little...precious girl... shattered to pieces. But it wasn't over.
Two more health bars popped up out of nowhere, and as Yui's figure broke, another emerged. This time, of...
Akihiko Kayaba. It wasn't him in his SAO form though, he was with short brown hair, wearing his long white coat. He gave us a serious look, and I immediately ran to try and attack him.
"KAYABA!!! I HATE YOU!!! I HATE YOU I TO YOUR VERY CORE!!" I hollered as rammed my sword into him. Kayaba shook it off like nothing and paused to look right at me menacingly.
"Kirito..." he said calmly. He then let out a little chuckle, which made me clench my fists.
"I wish you never existed..." I said, gritting my teeth.
"Kirito!" Asuna yelled as she ran up behind me. Kayaba pulled the sword out of himself slowly.
"Well, what is it you came for?" He said normally in a voice that made me so angry.
"TO KILL YOU!" I screamed, and shoved my sword back into him. Asuna joined in too fiercely. Tears streaked both our faces and anger consumed my entire soul.
"You're not helping anyone." Akihiko Kayaba said, out of nowhere, once we had leveled his health down to one bar left. "You can murder them all now, to keep you alive, or you can let them die off one by one."
"What are you talking about?" I hissed.
"What you're doing is not saving... it is killing...you're friends that have been trapped in this alternative universe...the one that's supposed to give you a 'second chance' you're only helping to kill them all."I stepped back and Asuna and I looked at each other, I clutched her hand in mine hopefully as Kayaba continued.
"By killing me, you can be sent back into the real world..." he said. "You can save yourself, and the one whom you love the most...but it won't mean anything. You, you're such fools. You thought you could save them...all your friends... but you're just helping them die. The Viruses were only to get you people to believe you had a chance. To believe you could leave, go back to Aincrad...and finally beat the game...like you wanted. But it's all fake. If you kill me, you're friends here, their time shall be spent, and it will be all your fault. Four thousand people, with an entirely fake second chance, will be gone, and the people in Aincrad... will be set free."
Asuna and I looked at each other as Akihiko Kayaba drew the sword out of himself.
"Well, now you can't stop me." He said as he clutched the sword. Asuna's breathing got heavy and my heart pounded. He wasn't...was he? It couldn't happen like this...no...no no no no no.
But it was too late.
Kayaba, the murderer he was, had ended his life, as well as four thousand others and I couldn't stop him.It was over... all of it. SAO...this fake world was gone.
I sobbed as Asuna and I fell to our knees and I felt my body finally start to shut down. Everything was black...I woke up. My face was hot and I could see through the translucent black screen of my nervegear. I was in a hospital. I pulled it off my head quickly and looked around. I looked down at my frail, pale hands and looked as the light poured in through the window and shone on me. I cried. Water spilled on the sheets that I was covered in and my whole body was shaking uneasily. Everything was gone.
Everything we did. It was for nothing. I sobbed endlessly, howling out loud in despair. I saw a few people rush in. A doctor, a nurse, and my sister, Suguha, ran in.
"The monitors!" The doctor shouted at the nurse. "The monitors!" I blocked out everything that was being said and just cried.
I couldn't save them. I couldn't...I felt long arms around me in a comforting embrace. I looked up and saw Sugu, hugging me and crying onto my shoulder too.
"Kazuto!" She sobbed. "Oh my God I'm so glad you're finally here again!" I didn't answer her, I just let the tears flow and the howling out of my system. Though everything had gone so wrong. I guess we had set free everyone in Aincrad, and as I expected, my sister, my family...they really were waiting for me to come home.
