I was just setting up the movie player when I heard the doorbell ring. I wasn't expecting to see anyone, so I was a little hesitant to get the door. I was especially nervous because I was still in my penguin pajamas and my tank top, so I was going to wait for my dad to answer the door. He would look more decent than I would.
"Violet?" I heard my dad call from the kitchen where he had just got up to put some popcorn in the microwave. "Can you get the door?"
"Sure," I shrugged. I figured my dad knew who it was since he seemed so relaxed about it. I stood up and walked over to the door, Mitty hot on my heals. I grabbed a sweater that was hanging up on the coat hook so that I could cover up my torso. I unlocked the door, pushing it out to see who it was on the other side.
Our front door was odd because instead of it swinging inside the house, it swung out. I mean, most people don't stand inches away from the door, but there was still a chance of them getting hit. It was weird that the door did that, and I suggested to my dad that we get a new one that actually works properly, but he said he liked this one for some reason I would never be able to understand.
I pushed open the door and stuck my head out to see who it was standing there. I could almost feel my jaw drop down to the ground and crack against the cement when I saw who was standing at our door.
"Emily?" I questioned as I pushed the door open even further.
"Oh lovely," she sighed, her comment sounding sarcastic. She placed her one hand on her hip where a pair of maroon skinny jeans sat. She had on a black coat, trying to keep warm from the chilly breeze that came off the water. For an older lady she was still pretty fashionable.
Emily stood there with a small plate of wrapped up muffins in her hand. There was a large, purple bow on the top of the plate that Emily handed to me.
I took the plate, a little unsure of what they were for.
"They're for our new neighbors," Emily said, answering my question. I wondered if I had spoken that out loud, but I didn't get a chance to say anymore because my dad finally arrived to see who it was at the door.
"Hello David," Emily said, plastering a friendly smile on her face. "My family sent over some muffins for our new neighbors. I hope you enjoy them; I tried to perfect them so that a baker as good as you would enjoy them."
"Thank you," my dad smiled. "That's so kind of you."
Our new neighbours? Emily's family was moving In right next door to my house. I would see Noah, Mark and Emily almost everyday since we were the only two houses at the top of the hill. I should have figured this out earlier; the hotel was run by Mark, and of course his family would be moving here. I just didn't think they would move into the house that had been vacant for so long. I now had new neighbours.
"Would you like any help unloading all of your stuff from the truck?" my dad asked suddenly, causing me to snap out of my puzzle piecing. "Violet and I would love to help."
"Are you sure?" Emily asked, trying to make it sound like she was being sweet even though I could tell by her eyes she wanted us to help.
"It's fine," my dad laughed, brushing it off easily. "Violet and I weren't really doing anything."
I turned around the stare at my dad. We were just about to have some father daughter bonding time and now he wants me to go help Emily and her family? They probably never want to see me again. There was no way I was doing that.
"You'll help, right Violet?" My dad asked me, giving me a pointed look as he grabbed his coat off the hanger.
"Of course I will," I said through gritted teeth. "I'll just go get changed and be out in a few minutes."
