Kamryn Kelly______________
"You cut your hair." was the first thing Niall said- or noticed-to me when I got in his car on a early Saturday morning.
"Yeah. Thought it was time for some mommy hair. Kaylee was pulling on it a lot."
Today we were on our way to a neurologist for Kaylee. Her pediatrician believes she has epilepsy, and referred us to a doctor in Pennsylvania called Dr.Owen. Niall and I in the same car for four hours will definetly be an adventure. However that was beside the point, this trip was for Kaylee and I was nervous beyond matters.
"How has she been?" Niall askes referring to Kaylee in the back.
"More sleepless nights." I nodd barely holding in the tears.Niall glanced back at Kaylee before finally starting the car and we were on our way to determin our daughter's future.
-
Four hours, two arguments, and a screaming baby later the three of us found ourselves sitting in a Neurologist office examination room."Kamryn, no need to cry. She's gonna be fine." Niall assures when he notices my glossy eyes.
"I know she will, just nervous."
Before Niall could reply the doctor entered the room.
"Hello, my name is Dr. Owen." A tall skinny man with dark hair stuck out his hand to shake both of our hands.
"Niall Horan."
"Kamryn Kelly." I force a smile despite the circumstances."Nice to meet the two of you, and this must be Kaylee Horan, I'm gonna take her out of her carriage if you don't mind." He gently took Kaylee out of her carriage causing her to give him a 'who are you and why are you touching me, mommy help' look. He checked everything that he needed to before giving her back to me.
"So, Dr. Partona has told me her symptoms that have been going on. Staring episodes, tight muscles and things like that, correct?"
"Yes sir."
"Well that gives us all the reasons to believe she might have epilepsy. We'll have to do an EEG to make sure. If you don't know what epilepsy is, Epilepsy is basically a disorder in which nerve cell activity in the brain is disturbed, causing seizures. Seizures happen when cells in the brain have abnormal electrical activity, temporarily disrupting the brain's normal electrical signals. We're not always sure what causes epilepsy it can be head trauma from a car accident, brain malformations, maternal drug use, lack of oxygen at birth..."
At that, both Niall and I zoned the doctor out and looked at each other. I knew he was thinking the same thing I was thinking. Kaylee was born with her umbilical cord wrapped around her neck making it hard to breath. I brought my hand to my mouth astonished. Lack of oxygen at birth.
"Now you shouldn't be worried, Epilepsy is very common. About 1 in 26 people get diagnosed either during childhood, specifically the first year of life, or older age, but newborns are at highest risk. So no fret, this is not too abnormal. " he smiled trying to tell us as well as show us not to worry. "Now, onto Kaylee's seizures, I'm sure you never imagined that Kaylee's actions were a seizure. This is probably because when you picture someone having a seizure, you probably see a stereotypical jerking and shaking motion. But those are adult seizures. Signs of seizures in babies are subtler and a naked eye would never know what's going on. The seizures may include rolling of the eyes or limbs may either stiffen or twitch, witch is something you mentioned. From what I've put together I believe Kaylee has been having Absence Seizures. this is when she appears to be staring into space or daydreaming, she may blink rapidly or appear to be chewing. These episodes usually occur less then 30 seconds but occur several times a day."
"So, what can we do about it?" I ask.
"Well first of all she needs to have a 48 hour EEG, that will show us the electrical activity going on in Kaylee's brain. This will tell or show us how bad or confirm what kind of seizures she is having."
