Chapter 3: Maisy

Today was the happiest day of Joseph's life! Maisy finally recovered enough to have visitors. He shuffled through his closet, trying to find the perfect shirt to wear for Maisy. At last, he decided on a light blue collared shirt with his new jeans. He planned on seeing her at exactly 7:00am, when visiting hours opened, so he woke up at 5:00am to have time to make her a mixed berry pie. But, it was already 5:30, so he had to hurry.

Joe ran to the edge of the stairs, and cautiously stepped down them one by one. Then started sprinting once again, gathering all his ingredients. Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries. While he sifted together the berries and sugar, he turned around and blasted the oven on. But Joseph didn't know how to work an oven. So, it backfired and burnt his eyebrows off.

He shrieked as he flopped back and banged his head on the drawer. He cried for a couple of minutes, then got back up, put the pie mix in the crust and stuffed it into the oven. Today is not about him. It's about Maisy. And he will let nothing stop him from seeing Maisy. Nothing.

"What the hell are you doing waking up at this hour?" Meredith muttered as she started making coffee.

"We're going to see Maisy," Joe smiled, "remember?"

"YOU'RE going to see Maisy." Meredith corrected him, "I'm going shopping."

"Well, how can I go see Maisy without a ride?" Joseph asked nervously.

Meredith shrugged while pouring her coffee, "Ride your bike." Joseph was about to remind Meredith that his bike doesn't have breaks, but the oven stared rapidly beeping.

"My pie!" Joe shouted, while he yanked the oven door down and grabbed the pan. He yelped when he realized that he forgot the oven mitts. Dropping the pie onto the counter, he ran his hands under cold water to sooth the pain. But he forgot the over was still on. It lit the near by curtain on fire, and Joseph quickly sprayed it with sink water, putting out the flames. Finally when all the chaos settled down, he looked at the pie. It looked delicious.

"Meredith!" Joe hopefully said, wanting to show her his pie and try to convince her to drive him to the hospital. But she was long gone. He knew what he had to do. Ride his catastrophic bike.

After he carefully attached the pie to the back of the bike, he began his journey to the hospital. He started to roll down the hill, but instantly ran into a car. The pie survived, his leg didn't. Luckily, he got a free ride to the hospital from an ambulance.

He awoke to the sound of someone calling his name.

"Joseph?" a sweet voice whispered through the room next to him.

"Maisy?!" Joe answered unbelievably. "How are you recovering?"

"Much better thank you, why are you here?"

"Well, I was riding my bike, um, to the hospital to see you," Joe stuttered, "I brought you a mixed berry pie."

"Aw, can I come in?" Maisy asked.

"Of course!" Joe smiled, as Maisy rolled her wheelchair into his room. "Do you want a piece of pie?"

"Duh! Hospital food sucks!" Maisy said, stuffing a giant bite in her mouth. After swallowing, she replied, "Mmmm, this is so good! What's in it?"

"Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and," Joseph thought, "oh ya, blueberries."

Maisy gasped and screamed, "BLUEBERRIES!"

Then Maisy died because she was allergic to blueberries.
