After about an hour ofdriving, Juliet and Violet stopped for gas. The sun was coming up now and Violet watched it as she took a drag from her cigarette. Her phone began to ring and she pulled it out of her pocked. It was Zayn, one of the last people she wanted to talk to. Violet sighed, answering the call. ‘Look, I know you’re probably pissed at me for what I said, but I wanted to make sure you guys were alright,’ he started, speaking quickly. Violet didn’t respond, waiting for him to continue, ‘erm, look, Violet, I’m sorry for what I said. I know you don’t usually act like that, I’ve seen what you can do.’ Violet began to nod, realizing that this wouldn’t translate through the phone, ‘yes,’ she stated simply, neither agreeing nor disagreeing with Zayn. ‘Niall’s alright, I thought you’d want to know. Violet could hear him shifting the phone, the boys’ voices in the background. ‘Oh, come on, I’m not saying that, man. Ugh, can’t I just put her on speakerphone? Alright, shit, give it a rest!’ Zayn sighed into the phone, ‘Niall told me to say…aw, fuck, do I really have to say it? Fine! He says…’I love you Princess.’’ Zayn mumbled as the boys’ laughter erupted in the background. Violet smiled, knowing that Niall had done that to get his revenge on Zayn for yelling at her. ‘Tell him I love him too.’ Violet heard Zayn relaying the message as Harry yelled something, ‘Oy! I’m not bloody saying that! Call her yourself Harry! Juliet has her own phone for Christ’s sake! Alright, I gotta go, we’ll call you in a bit.’ Zayn said before ending the call. Violet stood up before walking back over to the car. Juliet was sitting on the hood, her phone in one hand and a cigarette in the other. ‘Yes Harry. I know. She’s right here,’ She spoke into the phone, ‘Niall says he loves you…again.’ She laughed, hopping down from the car.
Another hour later the girls arrived at the ferry. Juliet parked the car and they got out, grabbing their bags. Violet pulled her ticket and passport from her jacket. ‘This says I’m sixteen.’ She whispered to Juliet. ‘Just go with it.’ Juliet said, giving the ticket master a smile as they boarded. He didn’t even bother to take a second glance at Violet’s fake passport, his eyes focused on Juliet as she sashayed her way onto the boat. ‘How come I always have to pretend that I’m younger?’ Violet whined once they were a good distance away, Juliet trying to stifle a laugh. ‘Because, you’re the innocent looking one. It suits you.’ Violet rolled her eyes. The girls climbed a set of stairs, traveling to the ferry’s upper level. Juliet led them to two seats by a window facing the front of the boat. A group of school children sat near them, excitement on their faces. They were listening to their teacher, who was telling them their plans for the rest of the day. Violet was surprised by how calm the children were, most of them looking out the window in awe. One of the kids, a little girl with pigtails, smiled at Violet. Violet returned the girl’s smile, giving her a wave. As the teacher finished talking, some of the children followed a chaperone to the bathroom, while others stayed behind, taking in the view. Violet watched as the girl kneeled in her seat, her hands pressed to the window. She noticed that the girl had a pink backpack with a ballerina on it in the seat next to her. ‘Do you like ballerinas?’ The girl turned her head to Violet, her pigtails swinging as she looked around for a moment before nodding, a shy smile on her face. ‘I’m a ballerina.’ Violet said softly. The girl’s eyes widened in disbelief, ‘really?’ She whispered. Violet nodded, ‘want me to prove it?’ The girl nodded her head enthusiastically as Violet stood up. Struggling a bit in her boots, Violet did a sloppy triple pirouette, but the girl was impressed nonetheless. She clapped her little hands together, a wide grin on her face. Violet returned to her seat as the girl watched her. ‘Do you just make friends everywhere you go?’ Juliet asked as she checked her reflection in a compact mirror. Violet shrugged, she found children adorable and had wanted to make the girl’s day a little more extraordinary.
Violet and Juliet spent the next few hours talking and walking around the boat, both of them too wired to sleep. When the ship docked they got off and headed to the train station. Violet was surprised as how well Juliet knew the route; until she remembered how often Juliet came to France for work. After spending another two hours on the train they finally arrived in Paris. Violet couldn’t help but smile when they emerged from the station. She adored the city and it didn’t matter to her what circumstances they were there under, she was just happy that she got to see the city again. Before Violet could properly take in her surroundings, Juliet had hailed a cab, giving the driver directions in French. ‘Eric is going to meet us a Place de la Concorde and then we’re going to drive to his house. It’s a little ways out of the city but he wanted to be sure to escort us.’ Juliet explained as Violet nodded, looking out the window as the city flew by. ‘When will the boys be here?’ She asked. ‘Well…they should be there already.’ Juliet replied quietly, checking the time on her phone. ‘Wait, what?’ Violet scrunched her forehead in confusion. ‘Well, they ended up driving back into London and taking the train directly to Paris from there.’ Juliet said hesitantly. ‘What!? Why? That’s crazy. Why would they do that? They know that the group from Wales probably has guys all around London, and what if somebody saw them there and followed them and-‘ ‘Relax.’ Juliet interrupted, putting a hand on Violet’s shoulder. ‘This is why they told me not to tell you.’ Violet sighed, too tired to be angry at this lie. ‘So, they’ve been at Eric’s while we’ve been lugging our asses around on the ferry and the train?’ Violet asked tiredly. Juliet laughed, rubbing her friend’s shoulder, ‘don’t worry; we’ll be there before you know it and you can rest. Eric has a really nice place.’
‘What did I tell you?’ Juliet said as she and Violet stepped from Eric’s car. Violet looked up at the chateau that was nestled in the French countryside. Juliet was right; Eric’s home was amazing. It looked like something straight out of a Jane Austen novel. Trees lined either side of the road up to the house, and there was a fountain in the courtyard out front. They entered the large double doors at the front of the house and Violet’s jaw dropped. It was the biggest home she had ever been in, even bigger than Harry and Juliet’s house. ‘Oh no. You hate it don’t you? She hates it?’ Eric asked sarcastically, looking from Violet to Juliet. Violet quickly shook her head, at a loss for words. ‘No, it-it’s…wow.’ She said, taking in the view. A large chandelier hung in the middle of the entryway above a marble staircase, which split halfway up, parting at the landing. Violet followed slowly behind Eric and Juliet who were catching up as they walked through the house. They took a left at the bottom of the stairs, going into a room that Violet could only describe as a library. Shelves of books lined three of the walls, while the fourth donned floor to ceiling windows with heavy white curtains on either side of each. A grand piano sat in the corner of the room and there were couches and chairs spread everywhere. Looking at the outside of the house, violet would’ve thought that the inside would be cold and uninviting, but it was the exact opposite. The house maintained it’s original style, but had some modernized charm making it extremely cozy. As they walked through another room that Violet assumed to be a study, she could hear voices coming from the doorway they were approaching. A grin spread across Violet’s face as they walked through the doorway to be welcomed by the boys. They were sitting in the living room, which was painted white like many of the other rooms, except for the large stone fireplace on one wall. The fireplace took up most of the wall and was made of a dark stone. Violet thought the contrast between the fireplace and the rest of the room was beautiful, they complimented each other. Niall’s face lit up as he laid his eyes on Violet, she ran across the room to the spot where he was sitting, practically jumping on top of him. Juliet laughed to herself as she kissed Harry before joining him on another couch. ‘They haven’t even been apart twelve hours!’ Louis exclaimed as he pointed at Niall and Violet embracing each other. ‘Jealousy doesn’t suit you, bro.’ Zayn laughed as Louis threw a pillow at him. ‘How are you feeling?’ Violet asked Niall, looking at the bandaging on his shoulder. ‘It’s not as bad as it looks.’ He reassured her. ‘Luckily Eric has some insanely skilled doctors on call so after they stitched it up in London and we got here, they looked at it again. It just grazed the skin so it wasn’t that bad, plus it wasn’t a high caliber bullet.’ He smiled at her. ‘Good.’ She said with a sigh, resting her head on his other shoulder.
For the first time in the past couple of days, Violet was at ease. She felt safe and was comforted in knowing that her loved ones were safe. Most of all, she was elated to have Niall by her side, safe and sound.
