A/N: I'm sorry that this chapter is a bit shorter! But a lot happens! Enjoy! xo
Violet sat on the couch in the living room, staring out the window into the darkness. She hadn’t been able to sleep, and hadn’t returned to her and Niall’s room since the argument. Violet leaned her head against the cold windowpane and sighed. She wanted nothing more than to go upstairs and make up with Niall, but she couldn’t. He’d hurt her more than ever and she wasn’t accustomed to arguing with him. She knew that she was probably overreacting, but her dancing was the most important thing to her other than Niall.
‘Vi! You’re still up!’ Juliet interrupted Violet’s thoughts as she entered the room. Violet nodded, exhausted. As she looked up she noticed that Juliet was fully dressed and gave her a quizzical look.
‘C’mon, get dressed,’ Juliet said as she grabbed Violet’s hand, ‘we’re going to that audition. But we have to leave now.’ Juliet smiled. Violet took a moment to process this, shock on her face.
‘But Juliet, I don’t have any of my stuff, I need shoes and-‘ Violet started but Juliet quickly stopped her, shaking her head and pulling her up from her seat.
‘We’ll pick them up on the way! Now go get dressed, we have to go!’ Juliet glanced at her watched as she guided Violet to the stairs.
Violet quietly entered the room that she and Niall were sharing. Niall was asleep on top of the covers. He looked so peaceful and sweet, Violet couldn’t help but feel guilty for deceiving him. She sighed, tip toeing to the bathroom and grabbing her clothes. She changed quickly and returned to the bedroom, where Niall was still fast asleep. She grabbed a piece of paper from her bag and quickly wrote a note to Niall:
Nialler, I’m sorry. I have to do this. I love you forever.
Xo –Vi
Violet placed the note on the bedside table and quietly stepped out of the room, closing the door behind her.
Violet watched as the sun rose on the horizon, illuminating the fields of green that ahead of them. She’d been anxious for the whole ride, imagining Niall’s reaction when he realized she was gone. She’d turned off her phone, not wanting to be distracted at the audition.
‘Everything is going to be fine.’ Juliet reassured her with a smile. Violet nodded, hoping that she was right. ‘Just focus on your audition and do what you do best girlie.’
As they continued to drive, Violet felt herself relaxing, excited that she’d soon be dancing. Violet glanced in the mirror to see a black van that she’d noticed behind them earlier. She knew it was probably nothing, but after all of Niall’s talk about them being safe, she found herself getting anxious.
‘Juliet, I think there’s someone following us.’ Violet said, looking back at a black van driving behind them.
‘Are you sure?’ Juliet asked, ‘they could just be heading to the same town as us.’ She glanced in the rearview mirror.
Violet shook her head, ‘No, they’ve been behind us for a while now. Maybe we should pull over or something.’ She looked at Juliet worriedly.
‘It’s fine,’ Juliet reassured her, ‘we’ll just see what happens.’
Juliet continued to drive the car, the road ahead of them was basically abandoned and there was nothing but trees on either side, which worried Violet. She continued to look back at the van behind them every few minutes, her anxiety growing with each mile they traveled.
‘They’re still there.’ Violet said after another 20 minutes of driving. Juliet sighed, her mouth scrunching up as she thought of what to do. Slowly, she pressed her foot harder on the accelerator and the car sped up. Violet watched at the speedometer approached 160 kilometers an hour.
‘Juliet,’ She started, fearful of how fast they were going. Violet’s sentence was interrupted as they heard a loud bang from behind them. She whipped her head around to see a man leaning out of the passenger side window of the van, holding a gun.
‘Juliet, he has a gun!’ Violet shrieked, her voice full of panic. Juliet kept her eyes on the road, glancing in the rearview mirror.
‘Open the glove compartment, quickly.’ She said to Violet, her command urgent. Violet grabbed the handle and opened the compartment to reveal a black pistol, which she picked up gingerly before looking to Juliet for instructions. Another gunshot rang through the air hitting the back windshield. Violet covered her head as glass flew throughout the car.
‘Vi, I need you to shoot, quickly.’ Juliet said as the car swerved. Violet shook her head,
‘No. I can’t-‘
‘Violet, do it. Now.’ Juliet replied sternly as she rolled down Juliet’s window.
Violet leaned out of the passenger side window, the wind blowing her hair as they sped down the road. Behind them, the driver sped up, trying to get closer as the gunman retreated into his seat. Violet pointed the gun; trying to remember the advice Niall had given her long ago. She’d had plenty of experience and was skilled in firing guns, practicing with and being coached by Niall countless times, but she still got nervous when the time came to use her skills.
She took a deep breath and put her hand on the trigger, waiting for the man to appear again.
‘It’s probably bulletproof glass, so don’t bother trying to shoot at the windshield!’ Juliet shouted from inside the car. Milliseconds felt like hours as Violet patiently waited, trying to devise a plan. Making a decision, Violet suddenly pointed the gun at the van’s front tire, firing. The bullet hit the car’s bumper and the driver swerved, Violet could see him swearing angrily. Violet shot again, this time hitting a headlight, glass flying through the air. As Violet prepared to fire a third time, the gunman reappeared, shooting at her. Violet ducked back into the car as the bullet whizzed past, adrenaline pumping through her veins. She leaned out of the car once again, firing more rapidly, filled with determination. Dodging her bullets, the man continued to fire, bullets hitting the car as Juliet desperately tried to control the car. As Violet continued to shoot, the man paused for a moment and then aimed his gun lower. He fired, knocking out one of the taillights.
‘Juliet, I think he’s trying to hit the tires!’ Violet yelled behind her. At the speed they were going Violet knew that they would be in trouble if a tire blew out. As Violet prepared to fire again, the gunman aimed for the back tire once more. Violet’s finger pulled the trigger as a bullet escaped his gun. The scene seemed to unfold in slow motion as Violet watched. His bullet hit the back tire as Violet’s hit him in the shoulder. As the tire blew, Juliet tried her best to control the vehicle, pulling Violet into the car as she lost control. The air was stolen from Violet’s lungs as the car flew down the road. Violet felt herself scream as the car spun, but no sound came out. As the car toppled off of the road Violet looked at Juliet as she was flung forward, hitting the cracked windshield. Her vision blurry and thoughts disoriented, Violet heard the van screech to a halt behind them as the side of the car hit a tree the impact throwing Violet across the center console as she tried to hold on to consciousness.
