Alex sat alone, his back pressed against the wall. His breath came in harsh breaths. His legs ached from riding for hours without rest, but not as much as his heart did. His eyes slid down, dull and tired.

The baby girl slept peacefully in his arms, blonde tufts atop her small head. He pet his daughter's hair back.

Alex huddled the baby close to him and finally allowed himself to break. Adelaide was dead at her own hand, to give their daughter a chance at life away from the fires of Hell.

Why had she killed herself so willingly? The woman he loved, the strong, beautiful queen with silver eyes was dead, all for an infant she barely knew. And soon...

He leaned back and breathed out a harsh sob. What was he supposed to do now? Xavier would hunt her down until her last breath. Tears trailed down Alex's face, cutting through the sweat and grime.

He looked down at the sleeping baby girl again.

She stirred, looking apon him with bright silver eyes. He drew in a sharp breath. Adelaide's eyes...

Just how much would she look like his late wife? Alex swallowed at the thought of the agony, then pressed it down. He'd have a piece of Adelaide with him. This was her last gift to him, and he would protect her.

"Iris," he whispered. "You'll be named Iris."
