"Hey, wait up!" Leo yelled as I walked away from the Hermes cabin. I had packed everything that I had, which consisted of a few sets of extra pairs of clothing, a random book Annabeth gave me,a toothbrush and toothpaste, and a dagger. Leo smiled and his blue eyes were bright and energetic. If being a demi-god of Apollo gave me cool eyes like that, I wouldn't mind being one of his kids.
"I came to congradulate you on you getting a quest," he said. I nodded."Thanks, Leo." I replied. "Daphne!" Percy yelled from up on the big hill that had Thalia's pine tree on it. I signaled for him to wait, and then turned back to Leo."Well, just be careful, okay? The last person who left on a quest.... well, it didn't turn out so well for him."
"What do you mean?"I asked, cocking an eyebrow. I knew that quests were dangerous, but was there something that Chiron didn't tell me?"Luke was the last one... and that's where he got that scar from. But anyways, I came bearing a gift," Leo said, then going through a really big bag. I chuckled." I was taught to not receive things from Greeks. Beware of Greeks bearing gifts?" Leo chuckled. He then got out a bracelet and handed it to me.
As he put it in my hand, it sparkled in the rain, even though no sun was in sight. Probably yet another advantage of being an Apollo kid. You're your own personal sun. But the bracelet really was stunning. It had many little versions of gold drachmas on it and a small owl figurine on it, which dangled from a thick leather piece."It's beautiful, really. Thanks, Leo."I said happily, hugging him.
As I let go he said,"I heard that you grandmother is Athena, so I recently added the owl. But it's a special bracelet, Daphne. Rub the owl."After I put it on I did what he told me.A big sword that was glinted with gold and a grey colour magically appeared in my hands, with a thin brown string attached from my wrist to my sword. The handle for it was made of brown leather, and it had words engraved into it.It read: καλοσύνη."It says kindness. Ya' know, kill people with your kindness? I thought you'd like the pun."
I was literally speechless."Leo... the only magical thing like this that I've ever seen before is Percy's sword. This is just-- incredible. How did you make it?" I asked, my thumb grazing the owl that was on the handle. It turned back into the bracelet."Well, I can't tell you that."He winked."It's for me to know and you to never find out."
"Well I'm good at finding things out,"I replied."Seriously! Daphne!" Percy yelled again. I sighed. "Leo, I've really gotta go. Thank youso much for the beautiful bracelet; it felt balanced and everything." I hugged him one more time, but when I went to let go, Leo held on."Leo, I've got to-"
And he kissed me. It was the third time since I've come to Camp Half-Blood. The kiss was soft and sweet, but also long. I had to pull away before it would turn into a make-out session. "Um...Bye." I said, turning away. Leo didn't bother to try to catch up to me as I ran full speed up to Percy and the others.
Grover and Annabeth were the only ones who were looking at me as I approached. Percy was turned away, looking at the tree in front of him like it was the most amazing thing ever. I felt bad for even letting Leo kiss me. I liked Percy, not Leo...Right? Ugh. Being a girl is so confusing sometimes. I looked at Grover, who was shaking his head at me. Annabeth had a puzzled look on her face.
"Sorry, guys. Leo wanted to say good luck." I say, rubbing my new bracelet."Well, thank was one heck of a 'good luck', don't ya' say?"Percy asked a little bit too harshly for my taste. His green eyes narrowed at the bracelet on my wrist and then back at Thalia's pine. I opened my mouth to say something, but I quickly shut it. I wasn't going to lie: I was hurt by the way he was treating me.
Why was he being so mean?
Chiron came up and gave me, Percy, and Annabeth bags of ambrosia squares. He told us not to use them unless it was an emergency. He also gave us canteens of nectar as well. He reminded it us that it was god food, and too much of it will burn us up. Literally. Percy had brought an extra change of clothes and a toothbrush, as well as his sword, Riptide.
Annabeth had brought her Yankees cap, which was a twelfth-brithday present from Athena. It made her turn invisible, which was awesome. She had also broughten books and her long bronze knife. Grover had fake feed and his hands to look human. He also had reed pipes and a bright orange backpack full of scrap metal.
Chiron then introduced us to a surfer look-alike named Argus."He will drive you into the city, and , er, well, keep an eye on things." I was guessing that he tried not to be puny. Argus had eyes all over his body, so I'm glad that I never have to sneak up on him. I then heard footsteps behind us.
Luke came up behind us, carrying a pair of basketball shoes."Hey!"He panted as he finally got up to us."Glad I caught you." I could see Annabeth blushing, which was a natural thing for her whenever Luke was around. "Just wanted to say good luck,"Luke told us."And I thought... um, maybe you could use these." Luke then handed Percy the sneakers."Maia!"Luke yelled.
White bird wings spung out of the heels of the shoes, starling everyone, but mostly Percy. He dropped them to the ground and the shoes flapped around like fishes out of water until the white wings disappeared."Awesome!"Grover yelled. Luke smiled at him."Those served me well when I was on my quest. Gift from Dad. Of course, I don't use them much these days..."
His expression turned sad, and I remembered Luke telling me about how his quest didn't turn out so well."Hey, man," Percy said to Luke."Thanks." Luke then begam to seem uncomfortable."Listen, Percy,"he began,"a lot of hopes are riding on you. So just... kill some monsters for me, okay?" They shook hands, which seemed a little too uncomfortable for me. I just rubbed the leather on my bracelet until it was Luke's turn to say goodybye to me.
"Hey,"he said, smiling."Do good out there... and I see that Leo's given you his gift."Luke winks at me, making my face heat up.Luke then gave me a hug.It was sort of an awkward one, but he whispered into my ear,"Be careful,"and pulled away.
He then left. I turned to everyone else, only to see Annabeth hyperventilating."You're hypervintilating." Me and Percy said at the same time. I chuckled lightly, but Percy didn't."Am not." Annabeth protested."You let him capture the flag instead of you, didn't you?" Percy inquired."Oh... why do I want to go anywhere with you, Percy?" She asked."Because I'm going!" I said, hugging her from the side. She laughed and I let go. She then walked down to the other side of the hill, where a big white SUV resided.
Argus folled behind her, fiddling with his car keys. I was tempted to follow her. "Hey, Grover. You want a magic item?"Percy asked, tossing Grover the pair of black and white Nikes that were magic. "Me?"Grover asked, his eyes lighting up. Grover then tried to lace the shoes over his fake feet, but they didn't quite fit.
"These are a size five. Darn," Grover said sadly. He then looked up at me from where he was sitting."Hey, Daph, don't you wear a size five?" I nodded. I didn't get why he wanted to know at first, but then I shook my head wildly."No, Grover. I've already got a magic item. See?"I held my arm up and dangled my bracelet for them to see.
Grover turned to Percy for backup, but Percy was looking away."Yeah, Daphne. Just take it."Percy said. He didn't say it as kindly as he usually does, but I'll just ask him what his problem is later. Where there's no adult to supervise us.
I sighed and untied my shoes, tossing them into my bag."Let me see,"I said to Grover. He handed me the shoes and I put them on. They fit perfectly, and were way better than my old torn up ones. "Well good gracious, they fit perfectly!"I exclaimed, standing up."Maia!"I yelled. I was soon lifted up, but I then fell sideways. Percy gve me a worried look, but turned away and began to chat with Chiron.
"Don't worry,"Grover said, helping me up."He's just mad that Leo kissed you." I began to blush a million times red. They saw that?"What, like he's jealous? Not likely, Grove. Let's go."I said. picked up my bag and me and Grover made our way downhill, leaving Percy and Chiron alone.
-------
Argus drove up out of the countryside and into western Long Island. It was sort of weird of being in a car, on a highway, and seeing the city again. It was like Camp wasn't real, and I'm just waking up and carpooling with three friends.Like I was normal.
But it wouldn't last for long.
