Once there was an athletic young man. He was hard working, determined and had a lot of spirit. He had a great potential of becoming a record setter in long distance. But like all young men he was also in love with this one certain girl. As a matter of fact, he joined athletics for a certain reason. He wanted to impress the girl. But sadly she never noticed him. Still he pressed on. Hoping she would one day notice him.
One day his practice ended early. He decided to walk around for a bit. While walking around, he noticed the girl he liked walking around the campus. He figured she was going home. So he followed her. He noticed that she looked troubled. She was walking around with her head down.
He noticed that she was too depressed to even look both ways before crossing the street. She didn't even noticed that she was about to be hit by a truck. Luckily the guy ran as fast as he could to push the girl away from harm. The girl fell on the ground and had a few scratches and cuts. But the boy suffered greatly. Both of his legs were badly broken.
He was rushed to the hospital. The doctors said that it would take time for his legs to recover. But he wasn't sad. For the girl visited hem everyday. It always brought joy to him every time he would see her face. Also her visits stirred him away from depression. For no one in his family could visit him. His parents were working abroad, he had no siblings or cousins and his caretaker is his grandfather. Neither the pain on his legs nor the fact that he can no longer be able to run again bothered him.
Everyday the girl would visit him and he would always have a great time talking to her. They got to know each other even more. The boy thought that this was the chance that he was waiting for.
Days later he decided to tell her on the day that he got out of the hospital. He was so anxious, that he couldn't sleep. So while he wasn't sleepy, he practiced on what to say. Hours later he fell asleep.
In the morning he anxiously waited for the girl to come. He kept practicing what to say again and again. Hours later he got tired of practicing. So he just waited. He was losing hope for it was already noon and she hasn't come yet. It was about time for him to leave. He was getting ready to leave his hospital room. But then someone opened the door.
To his surprise... It was a guy he never met. He had anger and rage in his eyes. He slammed the door. He approached the boy.
"I know she owes you a lot for saving her life, but from now on stay away from my girlfriend!!!" He exclaimed
After that the guy left and slammed the door. The boy was devastated. He felt like his whole world just fell apart.
The boy can walk, but with the aid of some instruments. What worse is that he was also broken inside. He was far from a fully recovered man. But still he went out. He wasn't planning to go home. He had no definite destination in mind. He just kept walking and walking. Even though the streets are unfamiliar, he still kept walking. He had nothing in mind, nothing at all. He just kept walking and walking. Like a wind up toy, but he had no limit at all. His feet bleed and he didn't even notice it. He just kept walking and walking.
He reached the place where the girl was almost struck by a truck. Where he save here, by trading his ability to run. Suddenly an image went through his mind. He saw the girl about to be hit by a truck, just like before. And just like before, he tried his best to save her. In his mind he pushed the girl and she was safe, but in reality he was standing in the middle of the road with his hand forward and he was smiling. He never noticed the light flashing beside him. He never moved an inch till the car struck him. When an ambulance arrived, it was already too late. He was beyond saving. In truth he was already beyond, from the moment he left the hospital. The moment his heart and mind died.
A tragic death for an athlete who saved the girl he loved from certain death, but lost his ability to run in the process. Ironically when it was his turn to face certain death, no one was there to even care...
