It was a warm spring day as Maggie Greene was attending to the farm animals.
"Here you go." Maggie cooed softly while holding out a small pile of corn in her hand for the little chickens that sorrouded her to eat. Ever since she was little she always loved the animals. Her younger sister Beth, was not one to enjoy the outdoors as much as she did so Maggie was the one who played with the animals and fed them.
When the chickens were finished, Maggie got up to go check on the chicks. She inspected the nest where they stayed counting to see that every one of them was there.
"None missing. That's good." She sighed in relief while taking eggs from the nearby cages. When she had enough, she moved on.
Maggie was more excited than usual nowadays. Her father had recently traded two horses for two alpacas with another farmer from the next town over.
__________
"Daddy, what'd you get? What'd you get?" Beth squealed happily jumping up and down. Despite her age, she was always energetic and excited when her father brought new animals home. Hershel jumped out of his truck now dealing with the locks to the carrier that held new members of the family."You'll see soon enough." Hershel says while beckoning for Maggie to help him. When Maggie catches sight of the alpacas, she is suddenly overwhelmed with emotion. "Oh my gosh." She says under her breath. "Daddy they're so cute!" Beth pushes her way through trying to see what her sister and father are seeing.
"What? What is it? I wanna loooooook!"
Maggie chuckled at her sister's whiny behavior and moved aside for her younger sister to see. Beth's eyes were wider than the landscape of the farm. "Oh my GOD!" Beth hollered. "Beth! Don't say the Lord's name in vain." Maggie scolded. Beth cupped her hands over her mouth as she realized what she just said. "Sorry." Came a muffled apology while Maggie continued to help her father."They were born 5 months ago, so they're still very young." Said Hershel leading the baby alpacas out with a rope. Maggie looked at the little animals with such fascination.
"Boy or girl?" Maggie asked.
Hershel pointed to one with a creamy brown coat while addressing it. "That's a girl." Then he points to the other that has a newly bought pack of white cotton look to it. "And that one's a boy." Maggie grinned while she watched her sister already cuddled up with the brown alpaca. She walked over to pet the male when she looked up at her father. "Do they have any names?"Hershel shook his head. "Not yet. They-"
"Could we name it fluffles and cuddles?" Piped Beth cheerfully. Maggie sighed. "Definitely not." Beth threw her sister a look of annoyance but said nothing more. Maggie shook her finger with a sneaky smile. "Oldest votes first."
"What about Shawn?" Beth pushes.
"He wouldn't care. They're just alpacas to him." She shrugged. "Doesn't count."
Beth stubbornly continued to stroke the unnamed animals while Hershel chuckled and simply watched."Beth, would you take them to their stables?"
Beth nodded and took the rope from her father taking them away."So I've been thinking of getting an exchange student." Maggie's head snapped towards her father's voice. "What do you mean?" She asks. "Well. Not exactly an exchange student but someone I know needs their child to get to college and she doesn't have time when it comes to helping." Hershel stated. "I see." Maggie muttered pondering in her head. "So when will they be here."
Hershel didn't seem to give it any thought as he quickly replied. "In about a day or two."
Maggie couldn't help but feel a little bit irritated. "Daddy, why didn't you tell me sooner?" Her father raised an eyebrow.
"How could I when I was on the two day trip? I had ran into the women during that travel." Maggie nodded quickly with understandment soon after the explanation. "Okay." She said walking to the house to check if there were any spare rooms for the new visitor.

Maggie's flashback ended as soon as she came face to face with the alpacas once again. "Hey." A still not so familiar voice said to her. Maggie turned around with the basket of eggs still held tightly in her hands. She sighed seeing that none of the eggs were broken. "I'm busy. Can't ya see that?" Simple t- shirt, dark blue jeans and a yellow and red baseball cap. The boy was about Maggie's age. And yes. If it isn't obvious enough, this guy was their "transfer student." Maggie spotted the hurt look on his face but still said nothing."Have you ever even been on a farm?" Maggie pushed. The boy shook his head. "My mom owns one, but I just work as a part-time pizza delivery boy." Maggie shrugged. "Ya oughta know at least a bit." She muttered.
She looked back up towards the boy. "Glenn, would you mind helping me with them?" Maggie asked nodding towards the alpacas. Glenn's face lit up with the excitement of being accepted. He nodded eagerly and hopped over the wooden gates of the pen. Maggie handed him a small bucket of food. "Here. Feed them while I groom them. She said while digging around in the a nearby box for the brush. Glenn began to hold out handfuls of food for the hungry little animals.
"Do they have names?" Glenn asked.
Maggie shook her head. "Not yet. We're still thinking on it." While Maggie was moving around she was careful to make sure she got every spot of the soft fluffy fur. Glenn shrugged. "Me to, honestly." Maggie raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?" Glenn shook his head with a sigh. "I wouldn't be able to make names for anything to save my life." Maggie smiled at the memory of Beth.
"My sister attempted to name them, but I shut that down quicker than you could say her name." Maggie giggled to herself.
'She has such a pretty smile' Glenn thought to himself only realizing what really needed to get done when he felt a little snout nudging his hand. "Oh! Sorry." Glenn apologized to the alpacas grabbing another handful of food.
"So," Maggie thought to herself aloud "Maybe you're not just some annoying kid I need to babysit all the time." Glenn threw a shocked pouty face at Maggie's statement but carried on with his task. The country girl took notice of this and quickly covered her tracks. "I mean, comon, you're good entertainment. I really can't find that in anybody nowadays." She muttered truthfully watching Glenn's expressions turn into flattery.
He playfully put a hand on his heart and gave her the happiest smile. "Wow. That's actually the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me in a long time." Glenn rolled his eyes while adding, "The compliments I get are usually angry costumers throwing slabs of pizza back at me because the person who made it in the kitchen made it wrong in some way, shape, or form."
At this, Maggie's soft giggles were replaced with booming laughter. "I would've never guessed." She huffed out her words with such effort as her laughs took more and more away from her. Glenn smirked nervously with a sigh. "Uh. Yeah... it's not really an easy job to put up with." Suddenly Maggie found herself reflecting feelings of pity towards the Korean. "Honestly, if it were me, I would have quit right away. But you put up with people's attitudes everyday." Maggie grinned sheepishly. "I'm a very good example." She says pointing her index finger right up against her cheek. "But you're still so nice to me even when you don't have to be and I really like that about you."
Maggie could have sworn she could see the slightest tint of blush cross Glenn's face but she said nothing about it. "Well, thanks I guess." Glenn replied nervously. Maggie's smile widened as she bonded with 'the pizza delivery boy who can surprisingly handle anything with a good cause.'
"You got any ideas?" Maggie asked suddenly. Glenn snapped up with a look of surprise. "What?" He asked cluelessly. Maggie pointed the brush she was holding towards the alpacas. "They really need names. Got any ideas?" She repeated again. Glenn looked up at the sky for a moment as if choosing wisely if he should say something or not say anything just to be on the safe side of not screwing anything up. Glenn takes a deep breath while addressing the brown alpaca.
"That one's Maggie," He moves on to the white one, "And that one's Glenn."
Glenn suddenly felt Something crack on his face as he lifted up his hands to wipe his eyes but only felt goo. He looked up to see Maggie with an egg in her hand and reaching down for another one to replace the opposite empty hand. "Screw you. That was my idea!" Maggie exclaimed playfully tossing another egg at Glenn. However he was prepared and made his way skillfully to the basket and grabbed a couple before getting hit once more. By the end of the day, the two teenagers were scolded by Hershel because not only did they lose apart of their breakfast for tomorrow morning but themselves, the pen, and most importantly, the alpacas by the new names Glenn and Maggie were in the middle of the greatest egg fight that will ever take place on a farm.
