He stood up from his seat with an annoyed expression and make his was toward us. He stopped a foot in front of me and I awkwardly stuck out my hand and he looked at it with furrowed eyebrows and a frown. He looked at me and bit his lip as he suppressed a laugh and slowly shook it. We all silently made our way to our seats and I looked between my fathers frustrated expression, my step mothers cheery one, and James's annoyed one.

Waiters came in and set down trays of food in front of us, and I was presented with steak and potatoes.

"Your favourite" my father said. Sending me a smile.

I smiled at him awkwardly. I wanted to make some sort of comment but I couldn't bring myself to be rude, my mother raised me better than that.

We all silently dug into our foods and I noticed the flavour and texture of the steak and potatoes was much different from my mothers, which made me miss her even more. But still, I ate them silently and noticed James was already finished with his and was now looking at me. I ignored his stare and continued eating silently, soon after I was interrupted by a voice.

"So, Emma" my step mother said "you're from Louisianan, correct?"

"Yes, I am, where are you from?" I asked as I took another bite of the steak.

"California, though I spent the last twenty or so years in Australia, a nice place called Melbourne" she said, afterwards dabbing the corners of her mouth with a napkin.

"Oh" was all I said.

"Your accent is thick" James said, the first time I heard him speak. I noticed that he had an accent as we'll. Australian, maybe? His mom did say she had spent a long time in Australia.

"Yeah" was all I could think to say.

Everyone got quiet again and we all finished off our plates, which were scooped up and replaced with smaller plates with a lemony flavored type of cake. My father had remained completely silent while we had been eating but decided to break his silence.

"Emma, me and Mary will be heading out of town tomorrow for an important business meeting, so you and James will be left alone in the house for a few days while we're gone"

"We expect you to behave" Mary said, pointing her gaze and her words at James, who just ignored it and looked away. "If you need anything beforehand just let us know"

"I'll be fine" I said.

"It's not you were worried about, dear" Mary said, smiling kindly.

From the other side of the table you could hear James begin to mumble something under his breath. Mary just ignored him and sighed heavily before her and my father exchanged glances. James caught this, then he rolled his eyes before standing from his seat and leaving the room without another word.

Two hours later and I was back in my room. I laid down into oversized bed with heavy eyelids begging me to fall asleep. My mind wandered to today's events, my new family, and my home back in Louisiana. After I let my mind run wild I fell asleep with dreams of my mother dancing around in my head.
