Things were never going to be the same for Steve Rogers. The man with a plan turned man on the run, all he wanted was to walk down the streets of his home without having to look over his shoulder and tug down his hat, hoping that no one was following him. He might have made up with Tony—even then, just barely—but he hadn't made up with General Ross or the authorities just yet.
Having returned to Brooklyn months after the events in Germany, the search for him and the rest of the 'fugitives' taking a back seat, Steve struggled to live a normal life; not that he knew what that was like. It was the same routine every day and there seemed to be no way out.
Until Rhett Reiser. A young elementary school teacher with a penchant for playing impromptu games of baseball with sad kids in Central Park, the man bore a striking resemblance to another man—a boy, at the time—that Steve knew in the 40's. From the stride to the smile, there was no mistaking how similar they were.
The two became fast friends, Rhett taking an instant liking to Steve, doing everything in his power to get him to duck his head and turn red at whatever flirty line he had dropped. And Steve, well, he couldn't help but latch onto to whatever last piece of the past he had. There was no harm, the likeness was merely a coincidence.
But over time, as Steve begins to notice the strange patterns and occurrences surrounding the man, he starts to question just how far a coincidence could stretch. There was something about Rhett, something off. Something that suggested that he might be just as out of time as he was.

AUTHOR'S NOTE
So! Another Steve fic! This had been in the works for a few months now and I'm excited to finally get started and write it, now that there's some set-up for the character.
Remember when Rhett was a completely different character? Yeah, that's changed! For those who don't know, Rhett, Nicky, and Diana all appeared in my other fic Lonely Hearts. You don't need to read Lonely Hearts to read this, as this is Rhett's story, but there will be spoilers for Spider-Man: Homecoming and Lonely Hearts.
This takes place months after the events of Civil War. I had done some research and came to the inferred conclusion that Steve and the others stopped becoming a priority to find, but they still lived uneasily, as seen by how uncaring the gym teacher was in mentioning that Cap was probably a war criminal.
