After the whole awkward silence about Shawn saying it was him, I cleared my throat. "I-I am going to throw away my food," I said, getting out of the chair. Way to go Shawn. Right when I threw away my food, the bell already rang for class.
------
I knocked on the door, "Is this after school detention?" I said looking away from the pass to the teacher. He nodded. I gave him my pass and sat by the window. I looked out of the window and think. How could I get Shawn to get his memories back? Giving him facts about us isn't really going to help. For the next hour and a half, I wrote a few ideas. I was so busy with it, that the teacher had to call my name twice to get my attention, "Jo, detention is over," he said and gathered his stuff. I nodded my head and went out the door.

An idea popped in my head. I ran outside to where the destination was. Wind was blowing my hair to my face, all I cared is going to that destination. I breathed heavily and put my hands on my knees. After a few moments, I dropped my backpack and walked towards the old giant tree.

The bumpy bark was cold against my hand. The engraving was still there but a little darker than before. The letters of me and Shawn's first and last names. Underneath it, it said "best friends forever" and the date when we engraved it into the tree. I got my phone out of my pocket and texted Shawn.

Me: hey can u go outside?
S: yea, where at?
Me: the park by the school
S: k
Several minutes later, Shawn came walking with pink cheeks from the cold. "Aren't you cold?" I shook my head, "That doesn't matter right now. Come here, I'm going to show you something." He walked closer to where I was and I gestured towards the tree.

He squinted and took a few moments to look at it, "Those are my initials and yours?" I nodded. "And the date is when we met?"

I shook my head, "No Shawn, that was when we engraved the tree." He stared at the engraving for a few minutes, thinking but shook his head as if he was making theories in his head. "Do you remember now?" I said with a small smile on my face, hoping that he'll remember. He shook his head. I frowned but Shawn then told me that he would take me out for hot chocolate.

"Didn't you walk here?" I questioned. "Psh no. Why would I want to walk in the cold? You're crazy," he sassed. I chuckled, "Okay Shawn. Don't go all sassy on me now." He snapped his fingers in a zig zag motion, "Honey, I just did."

I rolled my eyes, "Whatever you say. Just don't go crying to me when your crush doesn't like you back you're sassy." We walked to his jeep and turned on the heater. The heat thawed my cold face and hands. A minute or so, Shawn parked at a coffee shop. Once we got inside, we walked to a booth and sat down. The inside of the coffee shop was a cozy place. There was framed photos of the shop in the early 1900's and a hippie vibe to it.

A lady who looked like in her forties introduced herself, "Welcome, my name is Darcy and what could I get you this evening?" Shawn looked at me, "We will have hot chocolate with marshmallows and whipped cream and a earl grey tea."

She walked away from our booth."Wait how did you know I liked my hot chocolate like that?" I said, confused. He shrugged his shoulders, "Uh a guess?"  I nodded my head and cleared my throat, "So I was thinking that maybe we can get your memories back."

"Jo, its no use." he sighed, looking down on his lap.

"But-" I was cut off when Darcy put the cup of hot chocolate in front of me. I quickly thanked her and looked at the whipped cream already melting from the hotness of the drink. "What do you mean its no use? You can't just lose hope like that," I took a sip from the hot goodness.

"I did and maybe it's for the best," he responded. Wow, that hurt. "That's what you probably said when you stopped contacting me," I whispered, looking down so he won't see the tear falling off my face. I quickly wiped off the tear and looked up at him. In his eyes, all I saw was guilt and pity.

Tension started to grow every second.

"I didn't mean to and you know that," his voice cracked. "Oh really? Oh yea, just let me lie to myself that one day you will call or text me and everything will be sunshine and rainbows again. No Shawn, I didn't know that you didn't mean to, " I announced with sarcasm.

He was silent. "Just take me home." He put a ten dollar bill on the table and we walked out of the warm place. Snow fell down from the sky when we got in the car. The car ride was quiet that you could hear a pin drop. Once we saw my house, Shawn parked the car. He turned off the engine and I got out. "Jo, let me explain," he pleaded. I pretended to not hear him and kept walking to the front door. Shawn groaned in frustration and started the car, driving away fast.
