"Please don't tell me all you have is a motorbike." I said.
"You'll just have to trust me and hold on, and you'll be fine." Kayden stated. "Great." I replied.
For a moment I just stared at the bike in pure amazement. "We don't have all day Ridge." Kayden said while lifting a leg over the leather seat and placing his foot on the shiny silver petal. I sighed, and walked over to the bike. I lifted my leg over the leather seat and climbed on. I wrapped my small arms around Kaydens toned torso.
"Is there a helmet?" I asked. He nodded and handed me a black helmet, and I placed it on my head and tightened the straps. "Wheres yours Kayden?" "On your head." He replied. "This can't be safe.." I said a little worried. "You must be the good girl, live a little Dakota." He said. "If I want to live at all I probably shouldn't be on this bike." I said. He laughed, an actual laugh, it was somewhat deep like his voice yet it was also kind and light. "There's something more to him." I thought. His smile faded, "hold on princess." I did and for once I didn't comment on the pet name.
The wind rippled through my long brown hair and across the little skin I had exposed. My grip remained the same, a hold strong enough to keep me from falling off but also not tight enough to seem scared, because believe it or not, I wasn't.
We were about a block away from school when I told Kayden to pull over. "Something wrong?" he asks. "No, I appreciate the ride but i'll walk the rest of the way." I said. He seemed hurt, "why?" "If you want any sort of popularity, you won't want to walk in with me." I said looking down. The look on his face was disappointment, and he looked like upset. "You think that's what I care about?" He said holding the handle bar tight. "I could care less." "Well how was I supposed to know that? I haven't even known you a day and you think I know anything about you?" I said "I don't expect you too, I just thought you were different." He said. "This is such a screwed up world." He muttered underneath his breath. He takes the helmet from my hands and puts it on his head. "Have a nice walk, Dakota" And with that he drove up the dark pavement towards Pinehill High.
I ran a hand through my hair and began walking. "I didn't mean to offend him," I thought "I don't even know him, how could I know what he cares about." Throughout the walk all I could think about Kayden and everything he said. What does he mean by he thought I was different?
Before I knew It I had arrived at school. Summer had just ended and this was first term of grade twelve. I walked over to my friends, Brooke and Jane. "Omg Koda!" They screamed. "Hey!" I said as I gave them a hug. "Look at the boy over there." Brooke said pointing across the lot. Kayden stood with the four most popular boys in school, and he was surrounded by a bunch of girls. "Oh, that's just Kayden." I blankly stated. "You know him?" Jane asked. "Kinda, he's my next door neighbor." I responded. "Lucky.." Brooke murmured. I laughed a bit. "Anyways, how were your summers?" I asked. Brooke told us how her family did a bunch of traveling and Jane told us how she volunteered at an animal shelter and how her cat, Stanlee was. Brooke Jane and I were all so different yet we were best friends. Brooke was tall and fit with long dirty blonde hair and was really girly, Jane on the other hand had just passed shoulder length blonde hair and was on the shorter side, but she wasn't as girly as Brooke. After talking for a bit we all walked to our lockers and said we'd meet up at lunch.
I walked down the halls, red lockers on each side and walls covered in posters. I got to my first class, science. I sat at an empty desk and texted my friends until the bell rang. Right before the bell rang Kayden and his entourage walked in. He took the seat behind me. Great. Luckily Mr. Mahan walked in and quieted the class.
"Hello grade twelves! Hope your summer was good. Now let's get to science." Mr. Mahan said. "This term we're starting with a project, you'll be paired up with someone of my choice and will have the project completed a month from now." He started saying names and pairing students together. It wasn't a hard project from what I'd gathered, just a recap from last year. "Dakota I'm pairing you with Kayden due to the fact he's new and you had the highest ranking mark last year." "Okay." I said. Someone shouted from the back of the class, "nerd!" I just rolled my eyes. "Not my fault you barely passed." I said. Kayden sat down beside me somewhat shocked I would say that but he laughed a bit. In all honesty I think everyone was a bit surprised, I don't usually talk back.
"Kayden, I'm sorry about this morning." His face remained straight. "I don't know you Kayden. But I never said I didn't want to get to know you. You've lived here a day and we didn't start talking much until this morning." The bell rang and he stood up. "Whatever Dakota." Then he walked away. I put my head in my hands, why do I always mess something up?
The school day went by very slow. I watched Kayden smile and laugh, but not like how he laughed this morning, its different, it was fake except for some of the time when one of the boys said something funny. I walked home, admiring the nature in the city. In the distance I heard the familiar sound of a motorcycle engine, and it kept getting closer, Kayden. He stopped the bike beside me and took the helmet off. A look of sorrow and regret was upon his face for a quick second then disappeared. "I'm sorry Dakota, but we have a project to do and if you don't arrive home, I'll be killed." He said smiling. I smiled back and grabbed the helmet from him and put it on my head. "I'm sorry too Kayden." "Don't be, I was in the wrong. Most people could care less about what I care about, so the fact you wanted my school 'life' to be good caught me off guard." He said sympathetically. I wrapped my arms around his torso just as I had before and we were off.
We got to his house shortly after and put his motorcycle back in the garage. "We can start working on the project tomorrow." He said. "Sure, see you." I said and started walking down the paved walkway.
"I expect to see you the window tonight princess."
