She lay there on the bed
Not a tear streaming down her face
She knew her end was coming near
She knew she would leave this placeWhy it had come so early, no one knew
But she hadn't given up hope
Her hands were scarred
From clutching on to the ropeShe knew she was going to fall hard
But would she give up grip on the rope?
Or would she have to be pulled down
By those who didn't have hope?Which was better? She had no idea
All she knew was that she fought hard
And it wouldn't be worth it if she let go
Hope was her only card. But how then, would she accept her end?
She knew how, peaceful and in grace
She'd leave behind the best of herself
To make her world a better placeShe decided to give away her heart
To those whom she loved and cared
She knew they would appreciate it
The best part of her would be sharedAnd so when I went to see her
She smiled that painful smile
But it made relief flood through my body
Because I hadn't seen it in a whileAnd then the next second her heart stopped
She closed her eyes and went to sleep
While I too closed my eyes
And then started to weepHer smile. The last thing I saw
My face, the last thing she saw
I just took it all in
Her every perfection, her every flawAnd then suddenly
I had her strength, I had her love
I had her courage...I had her
I knew she was smiling from aboveAnd at that moment I was content
I hadn't lost a person! She wasn't done!
Instead she let go of her rope
And then we became one
