Cathy's POV
It only took them ages, but eventually they all got ready for dinner. I know my mother won't be pleased when she see's me sporting jean shorts, a red tank top and a long beige cardigan. But I'm comfortable. I always hate wearing a dress for too long; it's a hassle. No matter what I wear, whether it's for dinner or just in general, she will have a comment. Which honestly isn't fair seeing as she came in looking like a wreck earlier today.
As we enter the dinning hall, my nose is filled with the smell of whatever's cooking. I can already see some of my mothers friends shoot me glares because I'm "not suitably dressed". The girls and I walk over to my mother to say hello.
They all greet my mom so politely, when she turns to me I'm caught off guard by her hug. Hugs in public? This is new.
"You could have at least fixed your hair. Maybe some makeup." She pats my back gently. A new record; it hadn't even been five minutes and she's already commented. "Girls, why don't you sit with us this evening." My mother gestures to the empty table.
"Where are the Landon's and dad?" I ask. "Is Ricky still coming?"
"Yes he's still coming." She answers with annoyance. "Mrs. Landon isn't feeling too well and the men had a late lunch. They're already in the other room playing pool." She explains and not with a vey pleased expression. Her and dad must have gotten off on the wrong foot again today.
My mother has already taken the liberty to have our names written on little cards so we know where we're sitting. Obviously she's out Ricky to my right and herself on my left. Brilliant, keep my friends on the farther side. I want to yack when I see Ricky waltz over. He takes these dinners too seriously. Before he takes his seat he puts his hands gently on my shoulders and attempts to kiss me. I turn to face the opposite way and he hits my cheek.
The hell was that?
He brushes off his rejection and greets my mother. I think my mothers more in love with him than I am. Actually, no, I know my mothers more in love with him.
The girls are looking at me with worried expressions and I mouth "it's fine" while Ricky and my mother are still exchanging their hello's. When the waiters come out I subconsciously begin to look for Harry. I'm disappointed but relieved he isn't.
--
Half way through the dinner I don't talk. I'm mainly listening to the conversation being held between my friends, Ricky, and my mom. I don't want any part of it I just want to eat and go.
"There's a bonfire this evening after dinner. There'll be s'mores and things like that. It's only for the young adults so no children or adults." Ricky's thumb brushes his lips.
"That sounds like fun girls, you all love the bonfire!" My mother cheers on the idea.
"Oh, that sounds like fun Mrs. H, but I think we'll just head back after dinner." Alex speaks on behalf of the girls and they all nod.
"Maybe we can have some alone time." Ricky whispers to me. He places his palm on my thigh.
"I'll only go if the girls go." I blurt pushing his hand off. I look at them pleadingly.
"Um, maybe we can go for bit." Kenna says.
"Perfect," I stand up knocking my napkin to the floor. "Let's go find a spot before they all get taken." I push my chair out.
