Chapter 2

Videl's Point of View

Ah, pain. What a marvelous thing when it's not there. What a burden when it is. I was sinking in an evaporating stream when the pain came again, quiet and sharp. I cried out and opened my eyes. In front of me was the handsome boy... Gohan, yes. That was his name. "Should I give you more painkillers?" he asked softly. It was like he knew that my brain was exploding in pain, like he knew to speak gently so as not to hurt me more. I made a slight movement that he took as a nod, and a second later there was the sharp sting of a needle in my arm. Then, relief. Sweet, sweet relief. I sighed contentedly, and he smiled. I sat up slowly; when he reached to help me, I flinched away from him. "S-sorry," he stuttered, going pink in the face. "I should've known."

I shook my head slightly. "No, it's okay. I'm just...." I trailed off. He didn't finish my sentence for me, instead left it hanging in the air. We sat in silence for a second, and I fingered my pigtails, a nervous habit. Suddenly, I pulled them from their golden binds and let my hair hang, like a shiny black curtain. When he looked at me incredulously, I said simply, "I was tired of them." He nodded. "Understandable."

"Do you live here, Gohan?" I asked, trying out his name on my tongue. It rolled off easily, and I smiled, pleased. "Oh, no," he said, trying for a smile as well. "I live on Mount Paozu with my mother." My smile vanished; the mention of parents was too much at the moment. "What about your father?" I inquired gently. Normally, this would be rude to ask, but given that most of the population of this area was dead - including my own parents - I figured it was a fair question. "My father died 7 years ago, when I was 10," he said sadly. "He was a great man." He stayed quiet for a moment, then asked, "Your parents?" I looked down. "My mother died giving birth to me, and Dad..." I felt a lump rise in my throat, but I pushed it down. I would deal with those emotions later. "He was killed in the last attack." As I said it, I heard my voice waver - I had to bite my knuckles to keep from bursting into a dry sob. However, nothing compared to the expression on his face.

"Damn it!" he yelled, standing and smacking the wall. I jumped, startled, and stared at him fearfully. He turned, and his expression softened. "I'm sorry, that was uncalled for. It's just... I should've been there..." He looked so angry and distraught, I felt my heart break a little. "Don't be stupid," I chided. "It obviously wasn't your fault. If you had been there, the androids would've killed you with all the others. Right?" He looked to the side bitterly for a second, then back at me. His expression had softened once again. "Right."

There was moment of silence between us, and I glanced over at him. I could see now how, in my pain-killer induced delirium, I thought him to be an angel. His face, pale and handsome, emitted a sort of angelic purity and innocence. His eyes and hair were dark as midnight, though not quite as radiant as I remembered. His muscles were defined, his jawline strong. He looked the part of a strong and protective guardian angel. I knew for a fact that he could play that part as well.

"Thank you," I said sincerely, "for saving my life." He simply smiled at me and tucked me back into the bed. Once my eyes were closed, I heard a soft whisper in my ear: "You're welcome, Videl. Sleep well."

Indeed, I did.

Gohan's Point of View

I slipped out of the room quietly and, after once last glance at her sleeping form in the bed, shut the door and walked away. For a sweet moment, it was quiet. Then, a whirlwind of a child came out of nowhere and jumped on me. "Gohan!" yelled an energetic Trunks, brandishing a large paper-towel roll 'sword'. "Wanna play Knights? Or Warriors? Or Wizards? Or Magic Spells? Or something else?" He stopped for a brief second to breathe, then continued with, "Let's blast something! Ooh, can you blast a hole in roof with your chi? 'Cause that would be super -"

"Trunks!" I exclaimed, placing my hand over his mouth. "Shush. Please. She's sleeping. We'll play another day, okay?" I let him free after a moment, and in return he gave me a grin I could only describe as devilish. "Oh," came his reply, the sly grin still in place. With that, he ran down the hallway as fast as he could.

Well then, I thought. Whatever he is planning can not be good.

I shrugged it off and continued on my way, eventually wandering into the kitchen. The exquisite smell of meat tickled my nose. Bulma stood at the counter chopping some vegetables, while a pot of meat simmered on the stove. "Oh, hey Gohan," she said once she noticed me. "Is Videl sleeping?" I nodded and said, "The painkillers knocked her right out." Bulma smiled and continued slicing.

"Erm.." I began, clasping and unclasping my hands, "Can I come back tomorrow, please?" Bulma gave me a strange look, but said, "Sure, kiddo. You're always welcome here, you know that." She paused for a minute, then gave me a sly smile. "Oh, I see. You want to be with Videl, is that it?" I felt my cheeks begin to burn, and Bulma burst out laughing. "Of course, kid," she said with a jovial grin. "How can I deny young love?"

"I- what?! It's not-! How can you-?!" I choked on my own words. After a moment, I said, "I'm going to go home now." Again, Bulma laughed, shooing me out the door with a hand gesture. "See ya tomorrow, kiddo!"

My only response was a half-hearted grunt as I pulled open the door. With a small burst of energy, I took off into the night.

I'll see you tomorrow, Videl, I thought.
