I hear the alarm go off on my nightstand and I immediately groan. Only a few more weeks of this before I have the absolute best summer of my life and then off to college I go. However, I'm not finished yet. I lie in bed for a few more seconds before eventually getting up. I head to my bathroom and start getting ready. Since it's the week before spring break, I no longer wear much makeup (unless I'm on my period because period acne is a bitch) and I wear my hair natural. Which is fine, I have naturally curly hair and so I just let it air dry after my morning shower.
"Annabeth!" I hear my dad yell from downstairs, "Are you ready for school?"
As much as I wish I could tell him no and tell him the extent of how much I do not want to go to school, I respond with "Almost! Be down in a second!" I slide on a t-shirt and jeans before looking at myself in the mirror and shrugging. I mean apart from my dad, who is going to care what I look like? I run down the stairs to see my dad drinking coffee and reading the newspaper.
"Ah, have a good day sweetie. I might be late as I'm trying to get my last unit before finals together," He tells me. My dad is a professor at Columbia and teaches history.
"Alright, dad, love you. See you later." I tell him before heading out the door and walking towards the school. As soon as I reach the courtyard, I meet up with my best friend, Piper.
"Hey, Pipes." I greet her.
"Hey, AB. I am so ready for Friday. Like seriously, at 4:30 my butt is on a plane to Greece," She tells me. Her dad is a famous movie star and can't always spend time with her so she always gets big trips for spring break. "What are you doing for spring break?"
"I'm just going to be chilling at the house. Might read a few books, I don't know." I answer her question. And it's true, I don't know. I never know anything because my dad's job takes so much from him. The bell rings signalling that it's time for homeroom.
"I'll see you at lunch." I tell my friend as she waves me goodbye before heading to class.
As I sit through my English class, I can barely pay attention. My ADHD makes lectures harder to sit through and that is why I usually teach myself things the night before. I have an arrangement with my teachers where they assign me the work early just for that reason and you might be thinking that it is a bit unfair but I have the same amount of time to do the same work as other kids. The only difference is that I turn it in as they are being assigned the work.
I somehow make it through my first two classes and off to lunch I go. I hate Mondays through Thursdays due to our alternating block schedules. However, Fridays are full of chaos due to the eight classes being mushed into one day and the chaos helps me thrive. I find Piper sitting at a table with a few of our friends, Leo and Frank, before I make my way over to her.
"Hey guys." I tell them as I sit down.
"AB, you will not believe who I just matched with on Tinder!" Piper squeals.
"Who?" I ask her. Though I'm fairly sure I know the answer, I want her to humor me. There's only one guy that Piper squeals like that over.
"Luke!" She exclaims. My family is super close with Luke's family and he was at my house all the time when I was younger. Piper, too, was over at my house all the time because of her father. So naturally she fell in love with the cute, blonde haired boy at my house. Only he was about three years older than us and never gave Piper a second glance. Or at least not until now.
"That's great, Pipes!" I tell her, "Maybe now you'll get your childhood dream kiss."
"Oh shut up!" She blushes. I laugh at her sheepish expression.
