"Ketamine?" Scott asked as Deaton presented a bottle of the substance to the three teenagers.
"It's the same stuff we use on the dogs, just a higher dosage. If you can get close enough to Jackson, it should slow him down enough to buy you some time," the Vet grabbed an ash-filled jar from the shelf behind him and held it up in front of Stiles. "This is some of what you'll use to create the barrier. This part is for you, Stiles. Only you."
Stiles hesitantly took the jar from Deaton. "That sounds like a lot of pressure. Can we maybe find a slightly less pressure-filled task for me?"
"It's from the Mountain ash tree," Deaton continued, ignoring Stiles's request. "which is believed by many cultures to protect against the supernatural. This office is lined with ashwood, making it difficult for someone like Scott to cause me any trouble."
"Okay, so then what? I just spread this around the whole building and then either Jackson or whoever's controlling him can't cross it?" Stiles clarified, still unsure of himself.
Deaton nodded, "They'll be trapped."
"That doesn't sound too hard." Charlie encouraged.
"Not all there is. Think of it like gunpowder. It's just powder until a spark ignites it. You need to be that spark, Stiles."
Stiles starred accusingly at Deaton. "If you mean light myself on fire, I don't think I'm up for that."
"Let me try a different analogy. I used to golf. I learned that the best golfers never swing before first imagining where they want the ball to go. They see it in their mind and their mind takes over. It can be pretty extraordinary what the force of your own will can accomplish."
"Force of will, got it." Stiles said, beginning to feel more confident.
"What about me," Charlie asked, realizing she was the only one left without a task. "what can I do?"
Deaton briefly turned around to grab what looked like a second bottle of ketamine and a syringe from his desk before turning back towards the three teenagers. "You're the back up," he said, handing her the bottle and syringe. "incase something goes wrong with the first dosage."
Charlie reluctantly took the items from Deaton. She was hoping for a more important role than just the 'back up plan'. Scott noticed the frown deepen on her face as she took the second ketamine dosage from his boss, so he placed a hand on her shoulder in comfort.
"We can't risk you getting hurt, you don't heal as fast as the rest of us. Besides, we may need that second dosage. Who knows how long the first will last?"
Charlie knew Scott was right. She was only human, if the kanima were to attack she wouldn't stand a chance. She had been paralyzed once already and desperately wanted to avoid getting paralyzed a second time. Nonetheless she still wished there was something more she could do.
