Chapter Seven
A Problem
Vincent trudged to his new home, confused. Who was Adair anyway? Vince couldn't seem to put a finger on who he really was. Eve and another female wolf came to meet him. She was the one with long red hair, dreamy eyes, and full pouty lips that had pushed Adair away before. Her mind seemed elsewhere, and probably always was.
Eve was grinning. "The meeting is over." She declared. "Are you ready to take your thrown?"
"Me? They actually chose me?"
"Congratulations." The red haired woman said in a bored tone. "I'm Faith."
Vincent shook his head. Despite knowing he could be the new leader, he never actually expected to win. It was a shock.
"Are you ready to meet your pack?" Faith asked. "They want to reintroduce themselves to you."
"I suppose."
He was led away by Faith and Eve in front of a group of three others, among them Devin and even Jarren. Cheers and
howling hammered their appreciation into Vince's ears. Do they really want me? Vince thought in wonder, staring at the small crowd.
Then Adair and Jake slipped into his mind.
"Eve, I need to speak with you."
"Now?"
"Yes." He hissed. "Now."
Before Eve could rush Vince out of the spotlight, Devin began to howl. Others joined in against their better judgment.
Though they were still in human skin, the trees rattled, and the air wavered. Finally at the end Vincent joined them, louder than anyone
else. He felt a sense of liberation pump through his veins. He was shocked by his own daring. After a moment in full howl, the sound
began to die down until all that could be heard were the echoes bouncing off the trees. Vincent smiled, and Eve finally was able to
pull him away.
She dragged him into the house by the hand, then asked, "What's wrong?" with a curious gaze.
"Someone knows what I am." He replied before he lost the courage. "A little boy, twelve years old, named Jake."
"How do you know he knows?"
"While I was at the school he saw me and panicked. You should have seen the look in his eyes. He knows, believe me."
"Why didn't you track him down and fix it?"
"I did." Vince's voice was stern, frustrated by Eve's accusing tone.
"Then why didn't you catch him?"
Vince's eyes widened, finally realizing where this was going. "I couldn't run fast enough," He mumbled. " but that's not
important. What is is that I need to find Jake."
Eve scrutinized Vince, looking through his lies. "Are you telling me that you can catch me, but not a twelve-year-old?"
Vincent flinched under her gaze. "I was distracted, but that's irrelevant."
"How?"
"I found Adair." He admitted reluctantly.
Eve's mouth dropped, her eyes wide with surprise for a moment, but then she sculpted her mouth into a small frown, and
her eyes cooled. She sighed. "You're right." She replied. "That is irrelevant." She paused a moment. "Can you find the boy?"
