The rest of the day was a blur. Now Emily was walking home exhausted from the long day she had. She was still shocked from what Jesse had said in first period. God she hated school. If only she could be homeschooled, but sadly her mother had to work all day. Her mother was a lawyer, and a very good one. That's the reason why they had to move a lot. Emily hoped that when she was older she would be just as successful as her mom.
Once she arrived home, Emily sighed as she dropped her backpack down on the wooden floor and fell face first on to the couch. She stuffed her face into a pillow and groaned loudly. She decided to go start her project for English so she could get it over with.
She stubbornly got off of the comfy couch and stood up, slowly making her way up the stairs and into her bare room. Her walls were exposed and covered in white paint. Emily loved decorating her walls with posters of her favorite books and movies so that none of the wall was showing.
Emily picked up a random book from a box that was lying on the floor that was packed with all of her books. They were all her favorite and she practically memorized them. She sat down on her bed and began to work on the project, which only took her about an hour and she was already done.
Her second day at school didn't go so well. It was just as bad as the first. Everyone still chose to ignore her, including Jesse. No one really bothered her to even try to talk to her; she would just sit in lunch alone in the back on the reject table that was old and wobbly. The project was also coming out amazing. She made little props and everything. Emily's planning on inviting Jesse over so he could at least look at the project that he didn't work on.
Now she was in fifth period, trying to get Jesse's attention. She tapped his shoulder lightly, hoping to finally get his attention. He didn't even move. Once again, Emily tapped his broad, strong shoulders and got no answered. She tapped his shoulder again, and again, and again, each tap getting harder and harder until her nail was digging into his skin.
"What.do.you.want!" Jesse spat fiercely as his head snapped to her direction. Clearly, he was pissed by how his eyebrows furrowed in anger and stared at her with such an unappeased look in his facial expression.
Emily practically jumped in her seat as his sudden outburst. Her eyes widened and she quickly grabbed her notebook and scribbled something on a corner of a paper and ripped it out. She placed the small crumbled paper on the corner of his desk and waited for him to read it.
He looked down at the piece of trash, he should throw it away and not even bother reading it because of how badly he annoyed her, but he read it anyways. "You want me to go to your house?"
Emily nodded softly and bit her bottom lip as she prayed he'd say yes even though she completely despised him by now. But his looks were just mesmerizing and she got lost in another dimension when she looked into his eyes. But she still hated him.
Jesse sighed, seeing of how there was no way out of this. She was only going to bug him more and more until her said yes. "Fine. Meet me outside on the bleachers in the football field after school. Don't be late or I'll just go home." He said as he rubbed his temples tiredly.
A grin appeared on Emily's soft pink lips. A loud sound disrupted them as everyone got up, packed their things, and left the room. It was the bell for next period.
After her final class, Band, she played the violin, was over, she quickly scurried off outside towards the giant football field. The wind picked up causing her cotton candy hair to flow in the wind behind her. She climbed up the steps of the bleachers, remembering the agonizing torture her P.E. coach put everyone through by making them run up the bleachers twenty times non-stop. Her bum touched the cold metal as she sat down around the middle of the bleachers. She placed her hands neatly in her lap and watched as strong, sweaty, teenagers rammed into each other while wearing heavy layers of armor that were decorated with the colors of the school, red and white.
Emily didn't really like the sport, it never peeked her interest, nor did she ogle over the players like every girl in school did.
Until she saw him. Jesse was in the football team, that's why he wanted her to meet him by the bleachers.
Oh my god.
He looked absolutely gorgeous in the football uniform. The shoulder pads actually looked good on him, adding on to his muscular broad shoulders. Not like everyone else, the other boys looked deformed like a weird obtuse triangle.
Everything went in slow motion, like in the movies as Jesse laughed heartedly and took off his helmet and shook his hair side to side.
Emily bit her bottom lip softly as her cheeks heated up by just looking at him. He looked extremely sexy with disheveled charcoal hair sticking up in random places from his bad case of helmet hair.
Jesse glanced over to the direction of the bleachers and caught her stare, which made Emily quickly divert her eyes anywhere but him. He said something to his coach and then jogged up to Emily with his helmet in his hands beside him, resting on his hip.
"Hey." He said coolly as he ran his fingers through his messy hair. He didn't even bother to smile at her. There was nothing between them anyways.
Emily's cheeks turned a light pink, but this time of embarrassment. She couldn't even say "hello" to him because of her stupid mouth that had been sewn shut. She waved towards him and smiled kindly, that being the only thing she could do.
"Just smiled and wave" she'd think to herself "just smile and wave."
"Let me just get changed and we can go." Jesse added before he walked back to the boy's locker room.
"Would it kill her to even say hi?" Jesse thought as he walked in "I haven't heard her speak a goddamn word to me, or anyone. Maybe she's too shy." Jesse smirked to himself as he changed "With my good, charming, incredibly hot looks, who wouldn't be shocked and shy to talk to me?"
He finished changing and walked out to the cold autumn air, causing a chill to run down his spine. He walked back to the pink haired girl and once again ran his fingers through his now slightly neater hair.
Emily stood up and made her way down the metal steps towards the boy. Then she began to make her way back to her new home.
Jesse sighed seeing how she ignored him and followed behind. Once they arrived at her house Emily took out her keys that were covered in cute phone charms and key chains. She put the key into the lock and opened the door, instantly being hit with the delicious smell of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies.
Hearing someone open the door, Emily's mother turned around while holding a tray of a dozen or so chocolate chip cookies she decided to bake. "Emily! I made cookies!" her mother said ecstatically as she held up the tray. Her eyes wondered from her daughter, and landed on the tall male behind her.
"Who's that?" her mother said to Emily in sign language, causing Jesse to raise an eyebrow in confusion.
Jesse was so confused as to why they were talking in sign language and not in normal English human language.
Emily signed back, explaining to her that he was the jerk who she was partnered up with and how she wanted him to see the project.
Her mother huffed stubbornly. She thought that was a complete idiotic idea, but plastered on a sweet smile and looked back up at Jesse. "Hello Honey, my names Janet, it's nice to meet you. Emily has told me so much about you." The lady said cheerfully as she extended her hand out to him for him to shake.
Jesse just nodded and stuffed his hands into his front pocket of his jeans. "Jesse." He stated sternly and looked down at Emily who looked uncomfortable.
Emily pointed up to her room, signaling they were going to go up, and grabbed Jesse's arm and pulled him up towards her room. Let's just get this over with so he won't ruin my day with his cocky, jerky-ness.
They arrived to her room and right when she closed the door, Jesse bombarded her with questions.
"You can't talk?" Jesse asked bluntly as he stared at her with a hint of shock in his.
Emily rolled her blue orbs and nodded. Wasn't it obvious? She walked over towards her white queen sized bed and dropped her backpack on top of it before sitting down on it herself.
"Well why didn't you freaking tell me?" he spat at her angrily. He actually felt bad for thinking that she was weird. He then realized that he said, "tell" and instantly regretted it. He shook his head "I mean say- no...err...uh... Oh you know what I mean!" he growled and gripped his hair tightly, getting angrier and angrier by the minute for some strange reason.
Emily was shocked by his reaction. No one ever got mad at her for not telling them. They just shrugged it off and nodded. But he was making a huge deal out of this. She raised an eyebrow at him confusingly. He was going crazy. The next thing she knew he was waving his hands around, trying to make a point, and ended up whacking a water bottle and something else off of her desk, onto the floor causing it to fall with a loud thump and the sound of glass breaking.
The project was on the desk. The cardboard fell to the floor and the opened water bottle fell as well, getting water all over the letters that were written on the cardboard poster making it smudge until it was all one big black bob. The little glass figurines she bought had broken into a million pieces on the floor.
Jesse froze in place as Emily gasped and stared at the mess he made. He slowly turned around and saw the project on the floor and widened his eyes. "Oh god..." Jesse whispered to himself in shock. Now he really felt bad. From what he could see, the project looked amazing. His heart completely sank to the pit of his stomach. Not only has he ruined the project, but they'll both get an F on it.
Emily quickly walked over to the mess and dropped to her knees as she tried to save any pieces that had survived. None of it did. She worked really hard on this project. She really loved it and it meant a lot to her. Anger quickly took over her and she stood up, spinning around and charging towards Jesse. Silent tears were running down her eyes as she pushed him and hit his chest with her fists the best she could, but this did no effect on him. He just simply stood there and let her do as she pleased.
Her face, red with anger as she finally got tired of hitting him. She was breathing heavily as she slowly walked back to her bed and sat down. She dropped her face in to her hands and sighed. Now what? The project was due tomorrow and she didn't have anything left to work with.
"Emily I'm...I'm so sorry...I promise I'll make it up to you. How about you sit with me at lunch and we can work on a new project? Both of us." Jesse said softly as he took a step closer. He was showing a side not even he had seen before. He was always cold hearted and mean. And now he felt sorry for a girl he didn't even know.
Emily huffed and ran her fingers through her soft hair. They might as well try to turn something in, rather than turning in nothing and getting a zero on the project. She nodded and looked up at him, her eyes loosing the anger they once had. She grabbed the book she was using for the report and handed it to him.
Jesse took the book and skimmed it over. "Okay, I'll read as much as I can and tomorrow we can come up with something." He readjusted his backpack on his shoulders and made his way towards her door. "Bye..." he mumbled and walked out, leaving Emily in complete silence.
Emily dreaded to wake up the next morning, not wanting to see the disappointment in Mrs.Ferrins' eyes.
Emily walked into the crowded lunchroom, skimming her eyes through the crowd of hungry teenagers to see if she could find Jesse. She finally spotted him sitting right in the middle of the cafeteria surrounded by his fellow football team members. They were all laughing and having a good time or whatever boys did.
She slowly made her way towards the table. Several eyes landing on her small body. Some girls, who were obviously the group of Proda Piranhas, were staring at her and whispering insults to their friends.
The definition of Proda Piranhas: stuck up women, preferably skinny and sometimes with blonde hair, who wear expensive clothing who think they are all that and who run the school.
Once Emily reached her destination, all laughing stopped as the other male's eyes landed on her. When Jesse heard everyone stop their conversation, he looked up to see the girl hiding her face with her pink hair.
"Hey Emily, here, I saved you a spot." Jesse scooted over causing one of the guys at the end to fall off of the bench, a low growl escaped deep from the obviously pissed off male's throat. The guy got back up and sat on the edge of the seat while Emily squished in between the two strong shoulders that practically engulfed her. Everyone just stared at her in disgust while she took out her stuff.
"Who the heck is that Jesse? And why is that thing sitting here with us?" another guy spat in disgust as he looked down at her.
"This thing is Emily. And we are working on a project together, so if you don't want her sitting here, then you guys can get up and go sit at another table." Jesse said angrily to his teammate. Emily bit her bottom lip, deciding not to say anything to not cause any more problems.
Jesse and Emily began to work on the project, ignoring everyone's stares. The guys around them would whisper and snicker rude insults or profanities towards her discreetly to each other once in a while.
The insults kept on getting louder and meaner, until they had Emily on the verge of tears. Jesse noticed her eyes becoming glossy and he gripped the pen that was in his hand tightly until his knuckles were white, and slammed it on the table.
"Enough!" Jesse yelled angrily and abruptly stood up from his seat. "Can't you guys just shut up for once?" he glared down at the wide-eyed boys who were shocked and confused at his outburst. "What did she ever do to you guys to make you say rude things to her?" by now the whole cafeteria was staring at them in utter shock. "Just because she can't talk or she isn't popular doesn't mean she is different from any one of us."
By now Jesse realized that he had also done this to her, he had ignored her and didn't pay any of his attention to her when she made an attempt to communicate, thus being the reason he didn't know she was mute.
Emily just stared up at him; her mouth slightly opened in shock and her cheeks a bright red from embarrassment. She didn't understand why in the world he was standing up to her, but was glad he did. If he didn't, she would have had ran out of there crying her eyes out and sobbing loudly.
Jesse's face was red with anger as he finally calmed down from all the screaming and yelling. He picked up their stuff and looked down at Emily.
"Come on Em, lets go sit somewhere were there aren't any losers around to bother us." He spoke softly to her, liking how the nickname he had called her rolled off his tongue perfectly, leaving a sweet taste.
They finished the project where Emily sat the day before and it turned out pretty good, but not as good as the first one Emily made. When they turned it in and presented it to the class, well, Jesse presented it, Mrs.Ferrin smiled warmly and gave them a B- for their effort. After that Jesse had always been protective over her, not letting anyone say mean things to her, or they would get a punch to the face. Emily still couldn't tolerate his jerky-ness but soon learned to put up with him. After a couple of months of Jesse nagging and begging, Emily agreed to go out with him.
