CHAPTER TWELVE

Danielle's POV

Carl still hasn't woken up, and I haven't left his side. I can hear parts of the adults' conversation from where I am. They seem to be arguing about getting the supplies Hershel needs to perform the surgery. Of course Rick wants to go, but Carl needs him and his blood. The tears have finally stopped, but I'm sure you can still see the trails they left on my cheeks. I look at Carl's face and see the peacefulness that only sleep can bring nowadays. He looks younger when he's sleeping, this world is making him grow up faster than normal. When he's asleep he can forget about all the problems he faces during the day.

I don't know how long I've sat here holding his hand before a teenage boy walks into the room to inform me of the adults' decisions. "Shane and the man who shot Carl, Otis, are going to a nearby high school to get all the supplies needed to tend to Carl. The entire school might still be infested with walkers, but they have to try. Without the supplies, it will be very difficult for Hershel to perform the surgery successfully. Maggie is going to find his mom and bring him here. Oh, and by the way, I'm Jimmy." He says, smiling at the end.

I look out the window to see a light blue truck drive down the dirt road, going away from the farm and making a right at the end of the driveway. I'm assuming Shane and Otis are inside. I hope they make it back soon. I can't wait to hug and talk to Carl, and stare into his shiny blue eyes that remind me of the ocean. When he's better, we can look for Sophia again, and the three of us will learn how to shoot guns and crossbows when we get to Fort Benning.

~~~~~~~~~~~~ a few minutes later ~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hershel, Rick, and the middle aged woman come back into the house. Hershel checks Carl's blood pressure and listens to his heart through a stethoscope. The woman stares out the window, as if the truck will return in the next few seconds. I think her and the Otis guy are married, they seem to care for each other a lot. It must be really hard to be here when she knows he could be dying out there. Rick sits on a chair, head in his hands, for what seems like the hundredth time today. I can't believe tht just hours ago we were still at the church, praying for our friends and family. Carl got shot, we are with a new group of survivors, Shane and Otis are risking their lives for medical supplies, and the rest of our group is clueless as to what happened.
Carl's POV
It was a nice day. Probably around 10 in the morning judging on the Sun's position. I knew I would have to get to school soon but my mom said I could come outside for a few minutes before. The grass in our yard was a brilliant shade of green, something it hadn't been in years, and the air smelled like the flowers that my neighbors plant in their yard every year. I was about to sit down when I saw a deer walking lazily across the left side of the yard, sniffing the ground as it walked. I carefully took a step towards it, but it saw me and started walking away. I chased after it, and it started running. After a few steps, we were no longer in my neighborhood, we were in a forest. The deer was only a few feet ahead of me when I reached out to grab it again, but my hands went right through it. The deer vanished, but not before I could hear a slight whimpering coming from behind a tree. I walked around to see Danielle, tears running down her face. I smiled when I saw her, but none of my happiness was reflected by her. She clutched her stomach, and I only just noticed she was covered in blood, a small pool surrounding her.
"Carl! Carl, I got shot! You have to help me! I don't know what to do!" She cried, grabbing onto my hand. I tried to pick her up, maybe I could find my dad or someone else to help her. She was very lightweight, probably a factor of not eating properly in days. I carried her in the direction of where my house was just minutes ago, but we just stumbled around aimlessly for probably ten minutes. I knew she was losing blood fast, and I knew there was nothing I could do but find someone else to help her. We got to a small cabin and I opened the door, finding that the little house was deserted, and there was nobody that could help Danielle. I laid her down on the couch and held her hand, tears making an appearance on my face. Her blue eyes stared back at me, and I'm sure she could tell how much I cared for her when there was a knock on the door. Puzzled, I walked over to the door and opened it.
