Chapter Fifteen
Danielle's POV
To be honest, I haven't left this room for more than a few minutes since Hershel finished the surgery. Even Rick and Lori left so they can help out around the farm. But, I want to be here when he wakes up.
"Fever's gone down." Hershel says. He's been checking up on Carl every hour or so, just to make sure he's in a stable condition. Carl started to move around a bit on the bed and he opened his eyes.
"Sophia? Is she okay?" He asked.
I was about to say 'no, we haven't found her yet. But we're still looking.' But Rick beat me to it. "She's fine." he said. I don't know why he would say that. Does he really think we'll find her before Carl is well enough to walk around? He only needs another day of bed rest until he can get up. Rick's lie will just cause drama later on, doesn't he know that?
"Rest. We'll be right here, okay?" Lori said. Carl looked at me and I smiled. "You need to sleep. You'll be able to get up soon if you rest enough." He nodded before closing his eyes again. He was asleep in less than a minute.
T-Dog walked into the room and told us that the rest of the group just got here. Rick and Lori went outside to see everyone but I stayed where I was. If they want to talk to me, I'll be here. I was hoping that Sophia would be with them but it looks like they didn't have much luck finding her either. My Grandma came in the room and sat down next to me.
"Hey sweetie. How are you?"
"I'm fine. It's Carl I'm worried about. Hershel, the doctor, said he's stable. Rick and I gave him blood transfusions since he lost so much. Shane and another man, Otis, went to a school about 5 miles away to get all the supplies for the surgery. Otis didn't come back though." I told her.
She gave me a hug and a kiss on the head and she stood up. "We haven't found Sophia yet, but Daryl, Andrea, and Cameron went out last night to search for her. Poor Carol, she was crying all night." I was playing with Carl's fingers when she walked away, and I was still doing that when Dale walked into the room.
"Hey Danielle. They told me that you would be here." Dale said when he walked into the room.
"Hey Dale."
"I know it's hard on you when the people you love are hurt. I also know it can be boring to sit and wait for so long. My wife died a couple years ago from cancer and I always had to wait for hours and hours while she was in surgery or chemo. So, I brought you this book. It's not very good, but it'll help pass the time. Before you know it, Carl will be back on his feet, okay?"
I took the book from his hands. "Thank you Dale."
"You're welcome. Oh, and let Glenn borrow it when you finish it."
I sat on a chair next to the bed for about an hour until Jimmy told me they were having a funeral for Otis, if I wanted to come. Truth is, I didn't really want to go. Not because I didn't want pay my respects or because I didn't like Otis, only because I didn't want to leave Carl. But I knew it was important to go. If it wasn't for Otis, Carl wouldn't be alive right now. He also wouldn't have been shot, but at least he tried to make it better. I wrote a note to Carl. It said 'Carl, I went to Otis's funeral. That's the guy who shot you. He tried to make it right, he was a good man. I'll be back soon. Danielle.'

Beth put a rock on top of the pile.
"Blessed be God, father of our Lord Jesus Christ." Hershel said, reading out of an old bible.
Jimmy walked up to put another rock on the pile.
