CHAPTER NINE

CARL'S POV

I woke up slowly. I had a kink in my neck, but it didn't matter. That was the best night of sleep I had had since we left the CDC (it had only been a few days since we left, but it felt like months!) I finally opened my eyes to see Danielle still sleeping across from me. She was curled up in a ball, a peaceful look on her face. I hadn't seen her so calm before, she was usually either shy, sad, or hugging me. Not that I was complaining. I crawled over to her and poked her. She didn't move. I poked her again, but still nothing. I leaned down, right next to her face and yelled "WAKE UP!" Her eyes opened immediately and she tried to sit up, only to knock both of our heads together.

"Ow!" She yelled. "What was that for?"

"I wanted you to get up. I don't want to be lonely..." I trailed off after I noticed how babyish that sounded. "I think breakfast is ready."

We walk over to the RV and Danielle's grandma smiles at us. "Is there any food?" Danielle asks. Her grandma nods to us, handing us both a granola bar. Danielle's grandma was nice, even if she didn't talk much. I began to wonder if she had always been a quiet lady, or if it was a result of the apocalypse or her daughter's death. We walk out of the RV to find most of the adults standing around a truck, the weapons Danielle and I had found laid out on the front part of it. Carol looked like she hadn't slept at all, which was probably true, but who could blame her? Danielle and I walked over to join them. They seem to be talking about making search parties so we can find Sophia faster. There isn't a doubt in my mind that we won't find her. She probably just got tired and decided to stay someplace safe overnight.

"Everybody takes a weapon." My dad says. I assume he'll let me come, but my mom might have a different opinion.

"These aren't the kind of weapons we need. What about the guns?" Andrea said, clearly annoyed that she couldn't have a gun. Who did she think she was? Did she even know how to shoot a gun properly? Was her aim good enough that she would actually be able to shoot a walker if it was five feet in front of her?

"We've been over that. Daryl, Rick, and I are carrying. We can't have people popping off rounds every time a tree rustles." Shane to the rescue. Shane had been almost like a father to me, especially when my real dad was in a coma. When the walkers became a threat, he save my mom and me.

"It's not the trees I'm worried about." Andrea replied sarcastically.

"Say somebody fires at the wrong moment, a herd happens to be passing by. See, then it's game over for all of us. So you need to get over it." Shane told her. He was being a smart ass but everything he said was true.

"The idea I'd to take the creek up about five miles, turn around and come back down the other side. Chances are she'll be by the creek. It's her only landmark." Daryl knew what he was talking about since he had been a hunter for years.

"Stay quiet and stay sharp. Keep space between you but always stay within sight of each other." My dad seemed a little too overprotective sometimes. He never trusted me with anything. And he didn't listen to my ideas, like ever. I'm glad he's here, though. He is my dad after all.

"Everybody assemble your packs." Shane said. Danielle and I went to the RV and she got out both knives, one for me and one for her.

"Aren't you going to take a gun?" I ask her. I know I would if I had one.

She blushed. "I don't actually know how to use it. I've never even fired one before." She said. I thought it was wierd that she had never even fired a gun before, but I guess there was no need to know how to use one before this. I had only used them before because my dad took me to a firing range once for my birthday. I think it was two or three years ago, so I was only like ten. I was only allowed to use the guns that I would be able to handle (so the recoil didn't make it hit me in the face) but it was really fun.
