CHAPTER SEVEN
CARL'S POV
My dad just ran off into the woods to help Sophia. I crawl out from under the car and help Danielle out behind me. She gives me an appreciative smile and a 'thanks' before she walks off to make sure her grandma and brother are okay. I start to help my mom take all the things we found and put them into all the cars we have. Danielle comes back and helps us too. I can tell Carol is really worried about Sophia. I am too. She and Danielle are the only people I've met that are around my age. I guess they're my best friends now. I don't know what I would do without them.
DANIELLE'S POV
Carl and I wander away from the group a little bit, but wer'e still close enough that we can hear them talking. I look into the window of a black truck and see a dead guy. I'm about to move on to the next car when I see the blade of a hatchet peeking out from underneath his arm. "Carl, look!" He comes over to see what I'm pointing at and we make our way to the drivers side of the truck. At first I'm not sure if it's a good idea to open the door, I'm not sure if this guy is actually dead. I don't see a bullet hole in his head, but after Carl opened the door, he still doesn't move. He must be dead-dead then. Carl reaches for the hatchet, but he can't get it from where he's standing. He steps up into the truck, carefully tugging on the hatchet. I keep my eyes on the dead guy, just in case something happens. Carl gives one last tug on the hatchet, and finally gets it out from under the man before he falls out of the car with a thud. The guy from the truck leans over, and I jump, thinking he's still alive. But he just hangs from his seatbelt, not moving. I help Carl up. I see that not only is there the hatchet, but there's a whole kit with weapons in it attached to it. We run back to the group so we can show them.
"Shane! We found something cool! Shane, check it out, it's an arsenal." Carl says as he rolls out the bag, revealing the hatchet and several other knives and weapons. We're very excited about what we found, but Shane hardly even acknowledges us.
"That's cool. Go give 'em to Dale." Shane says, not even looking up from what he was doing.
"Check this one out. Woah, it's a hatchet!" Carl exclaims, picking the hatchet up. I pick up one of the knives. It has a serrated edge and a wicked sharpness.
"Be careful, don't play with those." Lori says, walking towards us.
"They're really sharp." Carl says, pointing out the obvious.
"What did I just say?" Lori is glaring at Carl and I, furious.
"Can we keep them?" Carl asks. He's pushing it, I can tell. Just shut up, I think to myself. He's going to make things worse.
"Are you crazy? No way." She takes the weapons away from us and wraps them up again.
"Shane. Shane, tell her to let us keep them." Carl tells Shane, who has been uncharacteristically quiet up until now. I don't really like Shane, but if he lets us keep these weapons, I'm all for it.
"Hey, y'all, go give them to Dale, now. Go." So much for learning how to use them.
Lori hands the weapon bag to me, and Carl and I reluctantly walk over to the RV and give them to Dale. After we give them to him, we climb into the RV. I suddenly remember that I haven't seen my bag, the one I ran back into the CDC to get.
CARL'S POV
"Carl? Do you know where my bag is? The one I ran back inside for at the CDC?" Danielle asks. After she was thrown off her feet from the explosion, my dad and I rushed out of our car to grab her. We took the glass out of her back and legs. I think I saw Cameron, her older brother, get her bag.
"I think your brother grabbed it. He was riding in here, so it's probably around here somewhere." We look around for a few minutes, and I find it behind the driver's seat. I walk over to her and tap her on the shoulder from behind. She jumps like two feet in the air. I try not to laugh. "Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you." I hand the bag to her, and she squeals before tackling me and giving me a hug.
"Thank you thank you thank you thank you!" She yells. She takes it towards the back of the RV. I don't follow her because I don't know if she wants me to see all her stuff, but she waves me back saying, "Come on, I wanna show you what I have." I grin and walk over to the table she's standing by. She opens the bag and at first, all I see are clothes and shoes. Then I notice a family photo album. I was confused, why did she want to show me this? It didn't seem like she really liked to talk about her past very much. Then she moved her clothes aside, and my eyes widened. I counted five handguns, two knives, and one box of ammo.
"Where did you get these?!" I say, picking up one of the guns and pretending to shoot it.
"My mom gave it to me. Before she got bit. She told me I should always keep them with me, but I didn't think I would ever actually need to use them. I didn't know she would get infected. I thought we were safe at the CDC." A tear rolls down her face. I wipe it away, and she gives me a small smile before she keeps talking. "I've never used any of them before, not even the knives. I was hoping to learn how, but I never had time. I wanted to learn how to use them so I could protect myself and my family."
"I wanted to learn how to use weapons too. But my mom is so over-protective. I thought that I could learn how to use the hatchet, but then we had to give it to Dale. I thought, for sure we won't be able to learn now! But we can! As soon as we get to Fort Benning, we can teach ourselves!" I could tell that I was grinning like an idiot, but I didn't care. Danielle was smiling too, she looked so pretty. Did I just think that? I can't believe I just thought that. I just brush it off. There's no way that she likes me like that. We're just friends.
"I would like that." She says.
